Is it true that a Catholic can disagree with non-dogmatic church teaching, such as birth control? I have heard, from a priest, that you can disagree as long as you have fully researched the issue, understand (and agree with) the spirit underlying the teaching, and feel sad that the church's teaching has failed.

What is the Church teaching on this?

Here is what I have to say on this issue. If YOUR interpretation of what the church teaches on ANY issue, is in contradtiction to what the bible says, QUESTION YOUR INTERPRETATION. Does the church teach you wrong? More than likely NOWAY..BUT Can you interpret a teaching wrong? YES absolutley!

Go to your bible and compare your understandings of the teachings to that..

Why is the Church's teaching on birth control non-dogmatic?

I don't know, either. I thought that dogma is a required belief, and I was told by a priest that some church teachings (he mentioned ABC) can be disagreed with under certain circumstances. I know that others have taught, on this board, that all teachings of the Magesterium - ordinary or otherwise - are infallible and required belief.

Hi Rhetor,
Dogmas cannot be rejected once known they are defined

Regarding the rejection of Church teaching on ABC - I am not sure what context it was said in so I cannot comment on his statement other than to say that average Catholic would not find themselves in a situation where doing this would be morally permissible.

Not all teachings of the magesterium are infallible, but we do have a duty to submit ourselves to the teachings.

Ugh. It's hard to not post in OBOB when people keep asking you to. :)

I can't say for certain that Humanae Vitae was a dogmatic declaration, but I know that the teaching of the Church on the topic of Birth Control must still be assented to. If one refuses to assent to the authority of the Church, they are sinning. The use of birth control for the implicit use to avoid pregnancy for convenience (medical treatment is another issue... lessening culpability) has been deemed a grave offense, lending itself to mortal sin. Especially for those who know the teaching of the Church on the issue.

The Church's teachong on Birth Control is infallible. Read Humanae Vitae. At the end, Pope Paul clearly uses the ex cathedra formula for his declaration. An ex cathedra declaration doesn't require a massive celebration like the Assumption or Immaculate Conception had.

Ordinatio Sacerdotalis is likewise infallible.

I spent years spiritually confused and fallen away because of trying to interpret the word of God through my own eyes, and I became a slave to my own mind. I'm much happier now submitting to the will of God and obeying the Catholic church.

Bless-ed are you, love is all you need, for flesh and blood have not revealed this to you, but your Father in heaven.

You have great Wisdom in what you write! Precisely because our Loving Father doesn't want us to do the impossible (figure everything out), He gave us a Church to preserve and teach what He revealed. The Magisterium (Teaching Authority of the Church) is a gift of His Infinite MERCY and Love for us. It helps us.

And, boy, do we need it!

I am trying to take in 2000 years of stuff in a month!

loveisallyouneed and Michelina, your words are wise...

Now your words are wise too. I admire your hunger for Truth but I know, from experience, to let the Church do Her job: Mater et Magistra - Mother and Teacher. We used to use the terms : ecclesia docens and ecclesia discens: which means the Magisterium (ecclesia docens) teaches us (ecclesia discens) we learn. Discens is related to the word disciple. We are disciples.
