Does anyone else notice how the United States (really all the world) is becoming more and more like Rome. We were founded on many principles that came form the greeks and romans but lately I have been noticing that we are really becoming like them.
Look at our society compared to theirs.
1. In both societies it was okay to worship any religion as long as you would also worship the gods.
Today we have to be tolerant of all religions. WE have to say things like Christianity is right for me but Buddhism might be right for you. If we go against this by saying Jesus is the only way then we are looked down upon as weird. That is how the early Christians were looked at. They were looked as weird because they would not worship all the gods. They were actually tortured because they would not worship the other gods. If they would of then Rome might of left them alone.
2. In roman times there was many orgies, drunkedness and lewdness. Today we see the same things. Homosexuality, MAMBLA, drug legalization, and other things show that we are a very permissive society also. The Christians of that day were looked at as abnormal because they did not satisfy their lustful desires. And so are we. Saving yourself until marraige is weird in todays society. Some say it can't be done. So again we see ourselves as very much like them.
3. Rome progressed trade and communication to new heights. Through their road system they made it easier to trade and also to communicate ideas and customs across national and cultural borders. Today we have our iternet and the ease of getting to the other side of the world that has never been seen ever. Ideas from other cultures and other nations (particularly eastern culture) are mixing with western culture and with Christianity more and more.
4. Now of course persecution was widespread for Christians during Roman times. Look at today. Christians are looked at as weird and not normal. Tehy are looked at as intolerant homophobic weirdos. But let's go to places like Sudan where Christians today are being killed for their religous beliefs. Chinese Christians are also persecuted.
5. Also look at some of the issues that the early Christians were discussing. The Trinity, Jesus' Godhood, Gnostic heresies, and the mystery religions. Just to name a few. Do those look familiar?
These are some of the things that I see that make today's society eerily close to Roman society. I do nto know what exactly to make of this but it is scary to me.
