SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc. is set to introduce its own instant messaging system, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday, marking the expansion by the Web search leader into not just text but also voice communications.

I predict failure. Unlike email and search engines, changing IMs generally forces all your contacts to switch as well. Which forces *their* contacts to switch. And so on

People would rather not bother, unless GIM is capable of connecting to established IM networks.

Well- possibly. If they were wise they would partner up with trillian and make sure their IM standard is supported. Better yet- they should buy Trillian.
