I am curious when I overhead my colleagues discussing about this book by Dan Brown and his other novel, Angel and Demon.

One said the book is a true fact and insist on lending my other colleague another book which somehow able to decode the truth behind Da Vinci Code. She said once know the secret behind this book, we are able to know what is truth and God.

erm....I just donno. was thinking of picking up the copy from local bookstores to have a read myself.

have you guys read the book or other novels by Dan brown before? is it worth reading? Is it really based on true fact?

Yes, read The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons.

is it worth reading?

If you can accept it is just a work of fiction and has a fairly predictable plot formula, it is a great read. But I'd recommend you borrow it either off a friend or from a local library, it is hardly anything more than a fun quick read.

Is it really based on true fact?

Your collegue is a bit of a nutter methinks. Both Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons have enough false historical assumptions that some people desperately want to believe because it supports the idea that we don't need the Bible's Jesus and that the church is evil and corrupt, that it could fill a dump truck. There isn't a credible historian or theologian alive that would put stock in Dan Brown's theories in Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons. But it is a good fictional read.

Great reading. I personally liked Angels and Demons better the the Da Vinci Code. The 'facts' are stretched to the limits. While there is some semblance to the truth, no a whole lot.

Plenty of people have cashed in on making books and documentaries surrounding it though. So there's plenty else to read about it.

I have read both books that Dan has written. Personally, I enjoyed Angels and Demons more. I take all his works as fiction, even though the preface says that The Davinci Code is true. It is fiction. Check out the facts yourself before you say it is truth etc. The Bible has had, and still does, many fact -checkers.

They are fiction and good reads.

However, there are a few clues in the Bible that give credence to speculation that is found in the Da Vinci Code. I. however, do not think that these books are necessarily anti-Christian. But they are definitely anti-Roman CAtholic.

Mark 16:1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body.

This would have been a wife's duty - if unmarried it would have been his mother.

16Jesus said to her, "Mary."
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!".
17Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' "

Only a wife would touch a man in public.
Mary Mag is also seen here as the apostle to the disciples. A position of honor.

Of course, by themselves these few passages mean nothing. The gospels were not written by eyewitnesses and are dated at least 40 years after the death of Christ. Add in the Gospel of Mary Magdalene (which no serious historian does) and the reality that in 100 AD all rabbis were required to be married - we don't know about before then - and you have room for speculation.

Would it have mattered if Jesus had been married? Not to me.

The book is shelved in fiction, but it uses the support of historical facts, etc.
It was written to be a good read and to make money, and that it has done. Please check out www.grailconspiracy.com for another book that doesn't have the same story but appeals to the same audience.

 To be completely honest with I have as of yet not read the books but from what I do know of the discussions of Da Vinci Code is that Dan Brown has simply linked legends together that have been written about seperately for millenia. If you really want the down and dirty on it try researching the net if you don't find anything pm me and I have tons of links to different sites which will show you what I am talking about. Just to start off with David Cronenburg the director has even been linked to the Priory de Sion with his Twin Peaks Television show. People beleive what they want regardless of the facts.:sigh:

Actually a lot of the characters that he has in the book are real although ancient they really did exist. But you are correct that it is a work of fiction.

I agree. Dan Brown is a great author, I have read all of his books, but if you check out the big picture of it all, though it has some non-fiction in it, it was put on the shelves as fiction, probably to imply, it was fiction. A lot of Star Trek fans still say there's going to be a Klingon hiding in their shower or something because the space knowledge was so sufficient, but in the end, it's all fiction. The DiVinci Code was a great book, for enjoyment, but that is what it is used for, enjoyment, not learning historical lost knowledge or conspiracies.

The History Channel had a thing about the davinci code. They exposed the many frauds in the book. They totally debunked it.

Here are some TV listings from the History Channel:

Decoding The Past: Beyond The Da Vinci Code.
Monday, September 05 @ 12pm ET

Decoding The Past: Beyond The Da Vinci Code.
Monday, September 05 @ 6pm ET

In case anyone cares to actually have the facts.
Here's the synopsis:
Is it the greatest story ever told--or the greatest story ever sold? A best-selling novel sparks a debate that could change Christianity forever. Were Jesus and Mary Magdalene married and co-leaders of their movement? Was Mary Magdalene, herself, the Holy Grail--the vessel said to hold Jesus's blood--and mother of his descendants? Did the early Church know this "truth" and deliberately mislead followers? Is there a secret, ancient society, the Priory of Sion, which still protects this bloodline? Have some of the most illustrious names in art and science been members? These are some of the questions that Dan Brown's best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code raises. We examine both sides of the story--the conventional view of Christianity and the "alternate history" proposed by Brown--so that viewers can decide.
