Just out of curiousity...my doc changed our daughter's formula to the enfamil nutragemin(sp?) the soy formula wed....he said she has the colic and that by changing the formula might be easier for her to digest....he than told me that if this did not work in a week (he said it would take a couple of days for the old formula to get out of her system) he would prescribe her some drops...do you know what these drops are?..both sides of our family think they are paraguart(sp?)....the same ped. doc that we use did our prenatal class and said that since it was made from opium they no longer prescribe that to infants(this was a few months back in class I heard this ...I was still pregnant)..so I was curious if anybody else had drops prescribed and what they were..cause this formula is not working...we are taking her back to the doc monday...and just curious...I really dont understand why we couldn't have just went straight to them..she is obviously in pain when these fits hit....it just breaks are heart....makes me want to cry with her

Why don't you call tomorrow and ask the nurse to call you back with the name and dose of the medication he'd want to use, then you can look it up.

If the medicine was really made with opium, it's probably long ago illegal.

Most likely they will help her get rid of the gas so she can get more comfortable more quickly, kind of like if you popped some tums.

You can get Mylecon right over the counter, ask your pharmacist.I'm wary of anything these docs prescribe for colic.Go with Mylecon, ask your Pharm first though.Hang in there! We had this with our 2nd daughter..Mylecon worked wonders. She's all grown up now :)

Believe it or not, most cases of colic are caused by acid reflux. Your doctor should have been looking into that as well. It's not always about the formula changes and diet modification.

You should get a second opinion from another Pediatrician before making a severe diet change. Formula changes can make things worse if not monitored.

I've never heard of anything prescribed for colic. I think my son had colic, after 12 weeks it clears up. Have you tried switching bottles also? and do you lay him stomach down on your knees and pat? The best thing that worked to calm David down was if my husband would lay on his back on the bed and put baby stomach to stomach and pat. Otherwise we didn't really figure it out either, after 12 weeks it just went away. There were some terrible times there, and one time when we went with my husband's parents to a restaurant and as soon as we got there David started screaming and he screamed for the whole hour and a half we were there while we took turns holding him and walking around. Oi.

Colic can be caused by alot of things: gas, indigestion, reflux. There is a plethora of causes for it out there. However pediatritians have recently begun to consult with gastroenterologists for their opinion regarding reflux. Low and behold there were 60-65% of little patients out there that had their reflux taken care of by a prescribed acid medicine.

Look at their little tummies, and if they look distended...chances are that something they are eating isn't digesting well enough, causing painful bloating and gas. Other times, if they spit up alot they most likely have reflux disease. Again play it by ear (Painful I know) and talk to the doctor for treatment options.

Spinal manipulation was more effective for colic than prescribed medication. A study conducted in Denmark and published in the October 1999 Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Theraputics (JMPT) compared the number of hours of crying for infants with colic who were treated with the drug dimethicone and those who were treated with spinal manipulation by a chiropractor. In the thirteen day study, the chiropractic group showed better than twice the reduction in the amount of crying from the fourth day on.

[font=Arial,Helvetica][size=-1]In a study looking at babies receiving chiropractic care for colic, 94 percent of parents saw improvement in their baby's behavior within two weeks of initiation of care. A little over half of these babies had already been unsuccessfully treated, usually by pharmacological means (Klougart et al., 1989). Another study found 91 percent of babies experienced a reduction in colicky behavior following as little as two chiropractic adjustments (Nilsson, 1985).

Give a chiropractor a try.

Well I called the peds office today..since my normal peds doc is not there today..the nurse said it was unlikely the doc on duty today would rec. anything other than what our doc rec...due to never seeing her before. They advised me to call back tom. and ask my doc what to do next..that he may could call something in over the phone so I want have to bring her in. I agree I think it does have a bit to do with acid reflux..we just got finished reading an article on it in one of our parenting mags this month. She has been gagging in her sleep, she is constantly smacking, she is spitting up alot, she does not like to lay flat on her back..and she has the hiccups alot. He did say that the gagging sounded like a bit of reflux..but, it was left at that. As for taking her to a back doc. I am not sure if our insur. covers that. Right now I have her sleeping...the constant movement of her swing is doing wonders! She has already had two crying fits today....I guess I will know more tom. But, was just curious on what treatments are avail....I have been giving her mylicon..which use to work great! A matter of fact I wrote for coupons and such..but, here lately it doesn't even seem to help at all...I just feel sorry for her..we have been giving her lots of attention and trying everything we can...she does manage to calm down for a bit here and there and she is just Lilly..but then she is right back to hurting.

That's sounds just like Acid Reflux disease! Poor little one.

You can try this. Regular filtered water in a bottle with one ice cube...and a nipple that has a slow feed. This can help keep baby hydrated, while giving baby a kind of cooling sensation for the pain. Unfortunately babies can't burp very well on their own, and as we all know it hurts to throw up. Also a warm blanket in the tummy or a warm water bottle on the tummy may help.

I feel for you, and I hope you come to some resolution fast with the doctor.

Thank you for the links I will def. check them out...I contacted the doc again yesterday and explained that the new formula is not working. He switched her back to her old formula(all this switching has made her tummy a wreck) They called her in some drops, as promised. They are called Hyoscyamine sulfate oral solution...I am typing this off the box. They do seem to be helping..somewhat. The nurse advised us that not to give them to her every four hours as suggested on the box..just when she hurts...I read the info that comes with it from the pharmacy and it said it was for stomach spasms...and it might make her sleepy. We gave her one dose late last night after she cried non stop for over thirty minutes...her usual colic fit(which can last WAY longer). At first she was a bit more fussy for a little while...then we put her in the swing after rocking her and she was fine...she went to sleep, then we put her in bed...when we went to bed a little after twelve....she slept til 6:30 this morning only crying once for her binky. While I am glad she finally got some relief and much needed rest...as well as hubby and I to...I still feel bad for her...all the things I heard about a mother's love before I even was pregnant is so true.
