Pink eye, and hand-foot-mouth

Poor thing. We have been through hand-foot-mouth with our oldest. He got it just before his 1st birthday and was absolutely miserable for about 2-3 days. It seemed once the sores in his throat started to heal, he started feeling a bit better. We also took him to the hospital because he wasn't eating/drinking and we had no idea why (that's where they diagnosed him). They did give him "magic mouthwash" - it is basically a mixture of benadryl and mylanta ... it helped numb the throat. My husband and I became painfully aware of how painful hand-foot-mouth really is when we came down with it a couple days later. So, just be on the look-out for symptoms in yourself or anyone else who has been around her (especially those that change the diapers) ... for us it started as a bit of a sore throat and then just blossomed. I pray your little girl continues to improve and that no one else gets sick. May God's healing hand be upon you all.

That sounds scary. What are the symptoms? How do you get it, from other people?

I feel terribly stupid... what is hand-foot-mouth?

Here's a brief run-down of hand-foot-mouth. My husband and I figured we got it (as did my mother-in-law) from changing our son's diaper. It is present in the fecal matter. Our son was exposed (unknowingly) from a friend's son. Within a week of exposure, he was down for the count. He got a high fever, terribly sore throat, and small blisters on his hands and feet. He was the worst for a few days and then started feeling better. My husband and I started feeling sick once our son started feeling better. So, we had my husband's parents take care of our son while we were miserable, and that's how my mil got exposed (my fil doesn't change diapers so he was fine). We were really sick for a few days ... high fevers, horribly sore throat (we could see blisters on each other's throat), and just ache-y all over. After about 3 days, we also started feeling much better. It is not something you ever want to experience. If you know of someone that's been exposed or has it, be sure to stay clear of them for at least a week AFTER they are well ... the boy we all contracted it from had been fever free for about 4 days when we were exposed.

Wow! Sounds awful - especially on the little ones! How did I raise three kids and never hear of this? Rhetorical question... not necessary to respond...

My little one is getting over the H/F/M disease. I diagnosed it befgore I got to the doctors and the doc said he hadn't seen a case in 6 months, doubted it was that. Hmpf! Welp, ten seconds later, he has h/f/m disease. Adam had a very mild case. His appetite stayed the same, no fevers, just mild sores on the palms, soles, and mouth...and a few around the buttocks. Twelve hours later, my daughter came down with a 103.0 fever. No sores YET...we shall see.

I've never heard of it either. Maybe it is a new thing...

I'm still recovering from a recent bout with Hand-Foot-Mouth. My daughter picked it up from her daycare, but she didn't show any symptoms. We just got a warning that there was a "case" of it going around in the daycare and that we should be careful.

All of a sudden, my palms and the soles of my feet were covered in bumps. It hurt to hold stuff, and it hurt to walk (which sucked for me because I walk to work).

Luckily, I didn't get anything in my mouth. The bumps are all gone now, so now I'm left with a lot of dead skin on my hands and feet where the bumps were.

And my daughter caught pink eye after her 2nd week at daycare as well. It really sucks.

I've heard of it all my life.. thankfully never had to deal with it !

well she is 100% better now. It wasn't H/F/M after all, we got a second opinion from our family doctor. She is now 15lbs 14oz, and 24.5 inches long. I would have called you Wanda, but my parents had just gotten into town and were a really big help, but now I won't see them again until November, so I will definantly call you for the next thing.
