It really depends on the movie, some rated R movies are not bad, but are have blood and violence. That's not to say I have not watched rated R movies that I knew were wrong.

The Passion comming out soon, will be about Christ last week on earth, and it is rated R, but it is because it accurately portrays what happened to Jesus.

There are many movies (The Passion being only one example) which may be rated R but which have great value.

I also think that this is one area in which we can have discretion based on our own relationship with God and ministry. I end up watching a lot of movies that I wouldn't choose simply because I work in a safe home for ex-prostitutes. Their movies and music are far more horrible than any I would choose for myself, but I am ok with the exposure because it is for the sake of my ministry with them. Now, this requires a careful and watchful attitude, and I often pray that God would begin to replace these things with better ones. I definitely wouldn't recommend that most Christians watch these movies.

Secondly, some terrible movies have redeeming qualities that make them worth watching anyway. "The Devil's Advocate", for example, was a terribly graphic and demonic movie, which I would not recommend to most Christians. However, the movie had a keen and unique viewpoint of God, and explored many of the issues that people today have against God and Christianity. They perfectly expressed the atheist's issues. For this reason I found a lot in that movie which is useful to my understanding of our society's conception of God--and this is very important to my ministry. Nevertheless, there are images burned into my mind from that movie that I wish I could get rid of.

And, finally, some PG movies may not have graphic sex and violence, but may contain subversive and anti-christian worldviews. Thus we must evaluate EVERYTHING we watch according to a biblical worldview, and not assume that it is safe simply because it has a low rating, or that it is harmful simply because of a high rating.

My wife and I try very hard to limit watching to PG or PG-13. In fact, we are very careful about PG-13 as well. If there is a movie that is rated R I will often wait for it to be on TV and catch it with my TiVo, since it will be cleaned up a little (sometimes a lot). I mean, think about it. If a bunch of non-believers got together and decided that something was so bad nobody under the age of 17 should see it, that hardly falls into the category of filling your mind with only good things.

But there are no hard and fast rules, because even some G or PG movies promote stealing as necessary (Aladdin) or even worse present the occult in a positive light (I could go on and on here). And, as mentioned, some R-rated movies have tremendous value as the Passion undoubtedly will.

But as a guide, PG and some PG-13.

i know that a lot of the stuff can be bad in a lot of movies but i dont see why we cant watch them. if there are good parts of the movies and the overall intention is good why shouldnt u watch it?? if we are a strong christian its not like we are going to go out and smoke pot after we see someone do it! i also dont think we should b so protective against all the wordly things. we need to know whats outt there so we cna help those in need/if they are struggling with those things.

Every time you put a graphic image of sex, violence, demonic things, etc into your mind, you are permanently changed. I can think of many images which I wish I did not have, because I saw them in a movie. It also desensitizes us to the harmfulness of what we watch--the more sex you see, the less you question whether it is depicted in healthy ways. You start to think that what you see on tv is real life, which is in itself a dangerous thought.

And of course, we are commanded to think about things that are pure, holy, right, true, etc.

Some Christians are called to a type of ministry which involves studying pop culture so that they can inform other Christians and respond to the culture with a Christian worldview. For example, I know of a Youth leader/college professor who has spent a lot of time studying Marilyn Manson, so that he can be a Christian representative to him (he is), and also so that he can teach his students about things like this so that they don't have to watch it or listen to it. This is exposure to something evil in order to serve a very specific good purpose. But this man would be the first to say that not all Christians should do the same, because of the detrimental effects it can have on you spiritually.

If we want to be like Christ, we need to ask ourselves whether he would waste the time, money, brainpower, and innocence that we do on "entertainment".

I chose PG-R. Of course, before I watch a rated R movie, I always do research on the movie (like whether there is nudity and how much profanity there is) and then get permission from my parents.

Well, you are not affected, because you are a strong Christian. But what about the 1,000,000 non-Christians which screwed up their lives because of it? And because the 1,000,000 Christians watching said, "It's OK, it won't affect me," it made so much money that they are planning a sequel. (Of course, if the 1,000,000 Christians hadn't watched it, it would have been a miserable flop and they would have stopped making such trash and tried to come up with entertainment that was pleasing to Christians instead.)

i suppose it really depends on how much you believe in spiritual warfare and what you put into your mind
