• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration (search) issued a second public warning Friday that adults who use antidepressants should be closely monitored for warning signs of suicide, especially when they first start the pills or change a dose.

I knew about this later after I read about Prozac... i honestly don't recommend it, I nearly killed myself because of this deadly anti-depressant.The lord saved me and without his help I wouldn't be alive here today. I later went on Paxil, which was pretty good, I'm no longer on meds and believe that I can handle my own problems ofcourse with God's help.

Doesn't it just figure that the thing that's supposed to help us is equally likely to hurt us? My personal experience...I haven't seen any improvement. I've been on Prozac, Prozac combined with Wellbutrin, and Zoloft. I'm still on Zoloft currently. It gives me headaches and hasn't improved my motivation, mood, or self-harm/suicidal thoughts. Prozac and Wellbutrin I think quite possibly made them worse, as well as giving me uncontrollable tremors. Basically, I haven't seen that they help. Maybe eventually I'll be put on one that does.

I just started antidepressants. No one is monitoring me. Ah well.
It is important to pay attention to things like this. Your doctor can't feel your feelings for you. If you are feeling worse, or more helpless then you need to quit taking the meds and call your doctor. This also applies to any other severe side effects you may feel. Trick No. 1 is finding the correct medicine, which is easier if you have a good doctor. Trick No. 2 is finding the right dosage. Trick No. 3 is determining if combining another med as well is necessary.
So self-monitoring is necessary, and telling the doctor how you feel is necessary. A lot of kids aren't honest with their doctors about what they do or how they feel, or what they're thinking in their head. Then they complain that all the meds they're on don't do any good.
So part of this pharmacological nightmare is due to a lack of communication that could be avoided.

This is true. Lack of communication is a huge issue. You should act like you're in a court of law- tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I myself am not all that great at the "whole truth" part. I answer all the questions my doctor asks honestly, but I don't volunteer information, which might possibly affect me. The thing is that I don't want to tell my doctor about self-harming because she has to tell my parents. My last appointment was only about 10 minutes long, just asked me what side affects I was having. I told her I've been having headaches daily, and she said it was pretty normal and to come back in a month. I think part of it is also finding the right doctor. One who cares at least a little how you're doing might be nice. However when you have to work with insurance, it's hard.

*note, you are not supposed to stop taking your meds if you're having side affects- stopping abruptly can make them worse. Call your doctor IMMEDIATELY though.
