THE LONG LOOK

Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal, I hated them there.
Hosea 9:15a

One of the most hallowed spots in Israel was Gilgal. It was the place where Joshua set up twelve stones to celebrate the successful crossing of the Jordan and thus became Israel's first place of worship in the Promised Land. What exactly happened at Gilgal that caused God to say, "I hated them there" is something about which we cannot be certain. God hates in a different way from us. with no pique and no animosity. He hates the sin but loves the sinner. And the expression of his Hatred is not to make himself feel better but for his people's good.

For Reading & Meditation - Hosea 9:15-17

15 "Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal,
I hated them there.
Because of their sinful deeds,
I will drive them out of my house.
I will no longer love them;
all their leaders are rebellious.

16 Ephraim is blighted,
their root is withered,
they yield no fruit.
Even if they bear children,
I will slay their cherished offspring."

17 My God will reject them
because they have not obeyed him;
they will be wanderers among the nations.

THE EVIL OF SYNCRETISM

Israel was a spreading vine; ... As his fruit increased, he built more altars; ...
Hosea 10:1

Many years ago, I did a study of all the warnings contained in both Old and New Testaments and I was staggered at the result. God gives his people clear information on what will happen if they disobey, so that no one caught up in his disciplines can say, "I didn't realise the consesquences." But look with me now at the opening verse in which God speaks of Israel as a spreading (or luxuriant) vine. The more they prospered physically the more they declined spiritually. The same thing is being done nowadays by some churches who advocate the celebration of different religions.

For Reading & Meditation - Hosea 10:1

1 Israel was a spreading vine;
he brought forth fruit for himself.
As his fruit increased,
he built more altars;
as his land prospered,
he adorned his sacred stones.

WEEPING OVER AN IDOL

It's people will mourn over it ...
Hosea 10:5b

Morality that is not rooted in God is a morality that is inadequate to hold people together. "Lawsuits spring up like poisonous weeds in a ploughed field" (v.4).

Couldn't these same words be said of contemporary society in which biblical values are choked and humanistic values abound as poisonous weeds? Note this also: In Samuel's day, Israel's tears had been for the captured ark of the covenant, but now the people will shed tears over a captured idol - the calf idol erected at Beth Aven (v.5). Can anything be more sad than seeing the glory of God exchanged for an idol?

For Reading & Meditation - Hosea 10:2-6
2 Their heart is deceitful, and now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will demolish their altars and destroy their sacred stones.

3 Then they will say, "We have no king because we did not revere the LORD. But even if we had a king, what could he do for us?"

4 They make many promises, take false oaths and make agreements; therefore lawsuits spring up like poisonous weeds in a plowed field.

5 The people who live in Samaria fear for the calf-idol of Beth Aven. [a] Its people will mourn over it, and so will its idolatrous priests, those who had rejoiced over its splendor, because it is taken from them into exile.

6 It will be carried to Assyria as tribute for the great king.
Ephraim will be disgraced; Israel will be ashamed of its wooden idols.

Powerful Word-Pictures

Then they will say to the mountains, "Cover us!" and to the hills, "Fall on us!" Hosea 10:8b

Hosea's use of metaphors and similes is something we have had occasion to comment on a number of times and, once again, he puts together three powerful word-pictures that unfold in graphic terms the problems that lay ahead for rebellious Israel. Hosea's word-picture is that of people crying for the mountains and hills to cover them (v.8). Here we see shades of the horror that struck Jerusalem a generation after our Lord had been crucified. Christ used these very words, you remember, as he made his way to Calvary: "they will say to the mountains, 'Fall on us!' and to the hills 'Cover us!'" (Lk. 23:30).

For Reading & Meditation: Hosea 10:7-10

7 Samaria and its king will float away
like a twig on the surface of the waters.

8 The high places of wickedness [a] will be destroyed—
it is the sin of Israel.
Thorns and thistles will grow up
and cover their altars.
Then they will say to the mountains, "Cover us!"
and to the hills, "Fall on us!"

9 "Since the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel,
and there you have remained. [b]
Did not war overtake
the evildoers in Gibeah?

10 When I please, I will punish them;
nations will be gathered against them
to put them in bonds for their double sin.

:amen: God Bless all!

[glow=red]WHAT TIME IS IT?[/GLOW]

Sow for yourselves righteouness, ...
and break up your unploughed ground;
for it is time to seek the Lord ...
[glow=yellow]Hosea 10:12[/glow]

God is now about to put a different yoke upon Israel's neck - the yoke of bondage and slavery (v.11b). A yoke is there to enable an animal to go in the right direction, and Israel's new yoke would have a similar purpose in the mind of God. The phrases: "Sow for yourselves righteousness ... break up your unploughed ground" have been used on countless occasions down the years by preachers calling the Church back to repentance; and particularly the phrase, "it is time to seek the Lord" (v.12). In other words, "there is very little time left."

[glow=red]For Reading & Meditation: Hosea 10:11-15[/glow]

11 Ephraim is a trained heifer
that loves to thresh;
so I will put a yoke
on her fair neck.
I will drive Ephraim,
Judah must plow,
and Jacob must break up the ground.

12 Sow for yourselves righteousness,
reap the fruit of unfailing love,
and break up your unplowed ground;
for it is time to seek the LORD,
until he comes
and showers righteousness on you.

13 But you have planted wickedness,
you have reaped evil,
you have eaten the fruit of deception.
Because you have depended on your own strength
and on your many warriors,

14 the roar of battle will rise against your people,
so that all your fortresses will be devastated—
as Shalman devastated Beth Arbel on the day of battle,
when mothers were dashed to the ground with their children.

15 Thus will it happen to you, O Bethel,
because your wickedness is great.
When that day dawns,
the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.

[GLOW=BLUE]DIVINE NOSTALGIA[/GLOW]

When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out ot Egypt I called my son.
[glow=blue]Hosea 11:1[/glow]

The chapter which now engages our attention has been described by one commentatoras, "one of the boldest in the Old Testament". His reason for saying this is because "it exposes us to the mind and heart of God in human terms." God now descibes himself as a parent grieving over his rebellious child. Some Christians have difficulty with the figure of God as a Father because their own experience of an earthly father has been negative, and thus they form a negative image of fatherhood and tend to project that selfsame image on to God.

[glow=purple]God's Love for Israel [/glow]
1 "When Israel was a child, I loved him,
and out of Egypt I called my son.

2 But the more I [a] called Israel,
the further they went from me. [b]
They sacrificed to the Baals
and they burned incense to images.

3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
taking them by the arms;
but they did not realize
it was I who healed them.

[glow=purple]AN AGONISED CRY[/GLOW]
How can I give you up, Ephraim?
[glow=blue]Hosea 11:8a[/glow]

How could anyone turn away from such a love as this? That is what Israel did, however, but God is committed to his people and, no matter what, he will not give them up. The very thought of forsaking his people and abandoning them to their plight arouses deep feelings in the heart of the Almighty. His big heart is caught up in a tremendous tug-of-war. Justice pulls in one direction and mercy in the other. Does God have emotion? Let the question never come up again. The Almighty anguishes over his people's infidelities, grieves over their wandering affections, and cries out in pain when his marriage shows signs of breaking down.

[glow=purple]For Reading & Meditation:[/glow]
[glow=blue]Hosea 11:4-8[/glow]

4 I led them with cords of human kindness,
with ties of love;
I lifted the yoke from their neck
and bent down to feed them.

5 "Will they not return to Egypt
and will not Assyria rule over them
because they refuse to repent?

6 Swords will flash in their cities,
will destroy the bars of their gates
and put an end to their plans.

7 My people are determined to turn from me.
Even if they call to the Most High,
he will by no means exalt them.

8 "How can I give you up, Ephraim?
How can I hand you over, Israel?
How can I treat you like Admah?
How can I make you like Zeboiim?
My heart is changed within me;
all my compassion is aroused.

[GLOW=BLUE]WORDS OF PROMISE[/GLOW]
"I will settle them in their homes, " declares the Lord.
[glow=blue]Hosea 11:11b[/glow]
We saw yesturday how the great heart of God was caught up in a tremendous tug-of-war. Now we see how God has decided: "I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I turn and devastate Ephraim" (v.9). This must not be taken to mean that God had changed his mind about disciplining the people; what it meant was that he would not destroy them or cast them away. The people of God would find themselves in the furnace of affliction but they would survive and have a future. Troubles still assail Israel, and always will, until the day comes in the future when through a radical and national repentance she will enter into a deep, intimate relationship with God once again.
[glow=blue]For Reading & Meditation:[/glow]
[glow=blue]Hosea 11:9-11[/glow]
9 I will not carry out my fierce anger,
nor will I turn and devastate Ephraim.
For I am God, and not man—
the Holy One among you.
I will not come in wrath. [a]

10 They will follow the LORD;
he will roar like a lion.
When he roars,
his children will come trembling from the west.

11 They will come trembling
like birds from Egypt,
like doves from Assyria.
I will settle them in their homes,"
declares the LORD.

[glow=blue]Right And Wrong - Universal[/glow]
Ephraim feeds on the wind; he pursues the east
wind all day and multiplies lies and violence ...
[glow=blue]Hosea 11:1[/glow]
Once again using word - pictures to describe Ephraim's double - talk and double - dealing - "Ephraim feeds on the wind" - Hosea warns that such deceit has not gone unnoticed by God. Double - talk, double - dealing and lies always end in disaster, whereever they are practised. The laws that govern right and wrong are of Universal application. Malcolm Muggeridge put it best when he said, "Truth and honesty have their source in the losom of God and their Voices when heard bring harmony to the world."

12 Ephraim has surrounded me with lies,
the house of Israel with deceit.
And Judah is unruly against God,
even against the faithful Holy One.

1 Ephraim feeds on the wind;
he pursues the east wind all day
and multiplies lies and violence.
He makes a treaty with Assyria
and sends olive oil to Egypt.

[shadow=red]A Strange Wrestling Match[/shadow]
The Lord has a charge to bring against Judah; he will punish Jacob according to his ways ...
[shadow=red]Hosea 12:2[/shadow]
After years of trickery, God finally caught up with the supplanter and arranged an extraordinary wrestling match between Jacob and one of his angels. Jacob came off worse and ended up with a limp which was with him for the rest of his life. But as a result of the contest he became a new man. The point of the story is: "... you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always." Israel's nature could not be changed apart from an encounter with God.
[shadow=red]For Reading & Meditation:
Hosea 12:2-6[/shadow]
2 The LORD has a charge to bring against Judah;
he will punish Jacob [a] according to his ways
and repay him according to his deeds.

3 In the womb he grasped his brother's heel;
as a man he struggled with God.

4 He struggled with the angel and overcame him;
he wept and begged for his favor.
He found him at Bethel
and talked with him there-

5 the LORD God Almighty,
the LORD is his name of renown!

6 But you must return to your God;
maintain love and justice,
and wait for your God always.

[GLOW=BLUE]WHY ARE WE REDEEMED?[/GLOW]
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt;
I will make you live in tents again ...
[GLOW=BLUE]Hosea 12:9[/GLOW]
What's wrong with finger-tipping the scales now and again? Or purloining a few odds and ends from work that nobody will miss? Or cheating on a tax return? This is God's paraphrased answer: "Is this what I redeemed you for, brought you out of Egypt for - that you be no better than the Canaanite? If that's the case then you had better go back to living in tents!" How sad it is when Christians who have been brought out of the world live no better than the people of the world. Is this what we have been redeemed for?
[GLOW=BLUE]For Reading & Meditation:[/GLOW]
[GLOW=BLUE]Hosea 12:7-9[/GLOW]

7 The merchant uses dishonest scales;
he loves to defraud.

8 Ephraim boasts,
"I am very rich; I have become wealthy.
With all my wealth they will not find in me
any iniquity or sin."

9 "I am the LORD your God,
who brought you out of [a] Egypt;
I will make you live in tents again,
as in the days of your appointed feasts.

[glow=purple]Moses - PROPHET OR LEADER?[/GLOW]
The Lord used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt, by a prophet he cared for him.
[glow=purple]Hosea 12:13[/glow]
Some in Israel may have thought of Moses as a great leader but the Almighty makes clear here that his main ministry was not to stand before Pharaoh but to stand before God. He was a prophet first and a leader second. Thus the spiritual nature of the exodus (not merely a liberation movement) is underlined. God's point is therefore clear - at least clear now to us - it is no good having prophecy and not heeding it. When our appetite for truth fails because of lack of exercise and obedience then we are in the most desperate of conditions spiritually.
[glow=purple]For Reading & Meditation :[/glow]
[glow=purple]Hosea 12:10-14[/glow]
10 I spoke to the prophets,
gave them many visions
and told parables through them."

11 Is Gilead wicked?
Its people are worthless!
Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal?
Their altars will be like piles of stones
on a plowed field.

12 Jacob fled to the country of Aram [a] ;
Israel served to get a wife,
and to pay for her he tended sheep.

13 The LORD used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt,
by a prophet he cared for him.

14 But Ephraim has bitterly provoked him to anger;
his Lord will leave upon him the guilt of his bloodshed
and will repay him for his contempt.

[GLOW=blue]KISSING CALVES[/GLOW]
It is said of these people, "They offer human sacrifice and kiss the calf-idols."
[glow=blue]Hosea 13:2b[/glow]
The Israelites had forgotten on important truth: it is God who makes man, not man who makes God. Earlier you will remember (Hos. 6:4) God likened the love of Ephraim and Judah to the morning mist - transient and temporary; now they are seen also "like chaff swirling from a threshing - floor, like smoke escaping through a window" (v.3). There is not much hope for people who have no morals or no character. They may appear to be prosperous for a while but their future is doomed.
[glow=blue]For Reading & Meditation :[/glow]
[glow=blue]Hosea 13:1-3[/glow]
The Lord 's Anger Against Israel

1 When Ephraim spoke, men trembled;

he was exalted in Israel.
But he became guilty of Baal worship and died.

2 Now they sin more and more;
they make idols for themselves from their silver,
cleverly fashioned images,
all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of these people,
"They offer human sacrifice
and kiss [a] the calf-idols."

3 Therefore they will be like the morning mist,
like the early dew that disappears,
like chaff swirling from a threshing floor,
like smoke escaping through a window.

[glow=blue]PETTY JEALOUSY?[/glow]
But I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt. You shall acknowledge no God But me, no Saviour except me.
[glow=blue]Hosea 13:4[/glow]
One liberally minded theologian describes God's threats here as "petty jealousy". Well, it is jealousy all right, but no "pretty" jealousy. Divine jealousy must not be confused with human jealousy. Human jealousy is usually full of self-interest - this should not be happening to me. Divine jealousy is characterised by other - interest - this should not be happening to you. In God, jealousy is a fiery concern that others will attempt to give his people what he knows only he can give.
[glow=blue]For Reading & Meditation :[/glow]
[glow=blue]Hosea 13:4-8[/glow]

4 "But I am the LORD your God,
who brought you out of [a] Egypt.
You shall acknowledge no God but me,
no Savior except me.

5 I cared for you in the desert,
in the land of burning heat.

6 When I fed them, they were satisfied;
when they were satisfied, they became proud;
then they forgot me.

7 So I will come upon them like a lion,
like a leopard I will lurk by the path.

8 Like a bear robbed of her cubs,
I will attack them and rip them open.
Like a lion I will devour them;
a wild animal will tear them apart.

"STORED UP" SIN
The guilt of Ephraim is stored up,
his sins are kept on record.
Hosea 13:12

You are familiar, no doubt, with the background of Israel's original demand for a king. Let's spend a few moments reflecting on it. The account is given in 1 Samuel 8. Israel began to tire of being led by an invisible God and wanted to have a visible leader like the other nations - a king. This was not God's wish but he allowed them to have a king nevertheless, and was prepared to bless this arrangement if they handled it properly. However, the people tended to worship the kings more than they did God and some ot the kings that were appointed were so corrupt that they hindered rather than helped the people.

For Reading & Meditation:
Hosea 13:9-13

9 "You are destroyed, O Israel,
because you are against me, against your helper.

10 Where is your king, that he may save you?
Where are your rulers in all your towns,
of whom you said,
'Give me a king and princes'?

11 So in my anger I gave you a king,
and in my wrath I took him away.

12 The guilt of Ephraim is stored up,
his sins are kept on record.

13 Pains as of a woman in childbirth come to him,
but he is a child without wisdom;
when the time arrives,
he does not come to the opening of the womb.

How Can God Do This?
I will have no compassion ...
Hosea 13:14c
The Springs will fail, the wlls will dry up, Israel's storehouses will be plundered, people will perish by the sword and little children will be dashed to the ground. A God who so clearly is love, must have a good reason to allow such things to happen, and I should interpret the strange and mysterious actions of God by what I know about him through the Cross: I know God is love and, though I find it difficult to reconcile some of his judgments with the concept of his love, I believe that ultimately everything God does will be fully and perfectly justified. Therefore I take my stand with tht of another who said, "Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?" (Gen. 18:25).
[glow=blue]For Reading & Meditation:[/glow]
[glow=blue]Hosea 13:14-16[/glow]
14 "I will ransom them from the power of the grave [a] ;
I will redeem them from death.
Where, O death, are your plagues?
Where, O grave, [b] is your destruction?
"I will have no compassion,

15 even though he thrives among his brothers.
An east wind from the LORD will come,
blowing in from the desert;
his spring will fail
and his well dry up.
His storehouse will be plundered
of all its treasures.

16 The people of Samaria must bear their guilt,
because they have rebelled against their God.
They will fall by the sword;
their little ones will be dashed to the ground,
their pregnant women ripped open."
