I've read both, and liked Jane Eyre somewhat better than Wuthering Heights, even though the second is clearly the more accomplished work of art, and the first at times comes tantalizingly close to being kitsch.

I guess it's because I wasn't really able to feel much sympathy for the protagonists of Wuthering Heights, who appear to be either spoiled or egocentric or corrupted or faint-hearted, and the overall tone of the novel is so dismal and bleak that it's not really a pleasure to read. Not that every novel *has* to be a pleasure, but in this case, my personal taste clearly diverged from my judgement as a critic of literature.

Like i said i loved Jane Eyre. Has anyone read the Eyre Affair? It is a recent book that is based around Jane Eyre. If you like Jane Eyre you might enjoy it. I did.
Sargasso Sea is also somewhat based on the Jane Eyre story, though set in the Carribean.

It's not just "somewhat" based on Jane Eyre - it's a direct, literary response to it, from a caribbean perspective. Jean Rhys felt that Charlotte Bronte had treated Rochester's first wife unfairly, mainly based on issues of "race". Thus, she wrote a novel from the perspective of Rochester's first wife - the later madwoman.

I've read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, and I liked them both. Wuthering Heights was kinda depressing, but I loved it anyways.

I watched Wuthering Heights on Sunday, and when you watch it, Heathcliff is really kinda...Stalker-esque. LOL.

Wuthering Heights is amazing, one of my favourite books ever. Jane Eyre was great, too, but IMO Charlotte's genius couldn't really compare with Emily's (just look at Charlotte introduction to Wuthering Heights - I'm sorry, but how jealous was she? lol). I went to visit Haworth and the parsonage museum nearly a year ago and I'm going again soon. It's really fascinating to see where they lived and wrote. The village and the land are beautiful.

I read Jane Eyre (loved it) and Wuthering Heights. I had seen the movie (WH) earlier and was surprised how much of a terrible character Heathcliff was in the book. In the movie he didn't seem that bad. I ended up hating him at the end and Catherine wasn't a whole lot better. My favorite characters ended up being the nurse and the daughter (second Catherine).

Jane Eyre is my favourite of the Brontes works.

I think Mr Rochester is a man who tried his best to the right thing but was constantly tied down by his families expectations, hence he became broody and somewhat testing of the characters (Jayne and Blanche Ingram)later.

Jane is my heroine, Brave and forthright, moral and strong through all her trials in life and the misfortunes that befell her also.

I first read this story when I was twelve and have read it over and over again and will probably continue to do so for years to come.

I love Jane Eyre, it is one of my favorite stories ever. As to movie versions, I think the one starring Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke is THE ONE, hands down.

I've read Wuthering Heights as well. You are not supposed to like the main characters, and I didn't, :) but I liked the novel.

Has anyone read Emily's Agnes Grey? That little and rather unpretentious gem is often overlooked. I enjoyed it.
