In Blanton911's question thread, Aaron-Aggie mentioned that the best way to study the Catholic faith is to read the Catechism. So now as someone who's obsessed with bookstores ( ;) ), I have a question.

Is there a specific looking book that Catholics would suggest for someone to buy to learn and study about the Catholic faith? What I mean is, when I go to various bookstores, sometimes I see copies of the Catechism, but there are several different looking books. I would presume they're put out by different publishing companies or something. So is there a specific one that you would suggest?

hehe...my Borders gift cards aren't lasting very long. ;)

Also, are there any books you would recommend that one could find in bookstores (or even online at like Amazon or Chistian Book Distributors or something) that are about Catholicism, but are not the Catechism? Or are there specific editors or publishers I should look for who would be sure to put out a book that is not biased in nature against Catholicism?

Thanks!

There is one that costs 8 bucks, and is short and fat. The cover is white with a blue bar at the top and bottom and the writing is large gold letters- "Catechism of the Catholic Church."

Oh boy did you ask the wrong person...I could run you into thousands of dollars of debt and enough book recommendations to last a couple decades!;)

What Catholics Really Believe by karl Keating

Why do Catholics Do That? by Kevin Johnson

These books are very general intros to Catholicism. If there is a specific aspect you'd like more info about just say so and I can give you some recommendations!:pink:

Angel,
there are a few books which I own which I whole heartedly recommend.

Four Witnesses: The Early Church in Her Own Words by Rod Bennett

The Mass of the Early Christians by Mike Aquilina
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0879739428/103-4946476-5730239?v=glance

Where is that in the Bible? by Patrick Madrid
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0879736933/103-4946476-5730239?v=glance and his Why is that in Tradition? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1931709068/stpascbaylschome/103-4946476-5730239

That white one might be the older edition:

This is the current second edition: (http://www.usccb.org/catechism/index.htm)

ISBN: 1-57455-110-8
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1574551108/qid=1072592018/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-9085251-5228135?v=glance&s=books

It is also on-line in many many places: My fav. becuase you can also read the sources for all the qoutes: http://www.kofc.org/publications/cis/catechism/index.cfm

When looking at books not published by the church it self look for a nihil obstat and a imprimatur.

Angel, head over to my website (it's in my profile), and check out the books I have...they all have links to Amazon and were all important in the formation of my faith...

That's easier than posting them all here.

The book that convinced me was The Everlasting Man by G.K. Chesterton. This, I think, is one of the best books ever written, including all genres.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0898704448/qid=1073079901/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-4998096-8937415?v=glance&s=books

Through Borders/Amazon you can get it for $10.36.
Perhaps the most important chapter relating to ecclesiology is "The Five Deaths of the Faith." It helped me understand the history of the Catholic Church, and why Christ founded a visible Church.
