when is the US going to do this?
Hopefully never. Unrestricted population growth is a horrible thing. We have enough overpopulation problems as it is, without irresponsible governments making it worse. Hey, maybe Australia could accept some of those refugees instead.

I can't believe a country that turns away the starving and the desperate, and then says it's patriotic to increase the population. They're the worst form of pandering morons.

Why is Australia doing this? I didn't know they had an underpopulation problem?

The US is growing at a pretty decent rate with immigration added in. Granted, without immigration, our birthrate would probably fall to replacement level, which isn't a bad thing, I mean, life isn't about trying to have as many kids as possible, if we have that much resource and energy, we should spend it on taking better care of the ones we already have.

Doesnt make sense to me. Australias population is about 20 million. Each year we have about 125,000 births and take in 125,000 refugees/immigrants.
Our cities (the few that we have) are getting overcrowded. Even though we have a land area comparable to the U.S, most of it is desert. That being said, we could have many more cities than we currently have.

I live in Perth, Western Australia (WA). Perth's population is about 1.5 million. The next biggest WA town has a population of 200,000. Total state population is about 2.5 million. WA is larger than Texas, with thousands of miles of coastline. A combination of incompetent government, environmental lobbying, and lack of money is preventing more cities from being established.

Australia doesnt NEED more people as such. The world is overpopulated as it is. Our population is aging due to a low birth rate. I think industry and government are worried about the aging population and its impact. But like others have said, you cant keep growing indefinitely.

Yes, a lot of developed nations have that aging issue. Japan in particular is being hit hard with it. While this is a problem, I think the US has hit upon a possible solution with legal immigration replacing an aging workforce. This world has a lot of countries with a surplus of people and poverty, letting people who can do the work and become productive tax payers would benefit us and the people who have the will to immigrate over.

I agree. But the world can fit a lot more people on it than it has now. But quality of life for people on a very crowded world would be lower. A lower proportion of people would have the luxury of spacious homes and politically, a single vote would be a more insignificant percentage than before. The roads would be more crowded and there would be less natural environment. Natural disasters would be more likely to kill lots of people. Limited natural resources would be more scarce. So I don't see the big advantage of rushing to overpopulate the earth. I believe in quality of life (free time, abundance of space) rather than quantity (the size of economies or populations).
