There is a girl in my Church named Rosemary, and she wants to find some new books to read. She like the Fantasy/SciFi genre, mostly the adventure stuff. the problem is her mom has vetoed a lot of books Rosemary wants to read, so I'm trying to find some good ones that she can read.
Her mom wants no sex and no rebelling against good authorities or adults. Magic is ok, but shes not crazy about it. And it can't be too dark
Any ideas?
Burrough's Tarzan and Princess of Mars series

The worst part with the marsw series are the covers, and that at the beginning the main character mentions how no one wears anything... then that's it no sex, sensuality, and etc.. just fun adventure (a real blast to read). there are some swordfighting, but it's not very graphic about those.

I also recommend Asimov's Robot series and if you add the tie-in Foundation series, that's 16+ books to read. Very good reading too.
I don't want to hijack this thread, but I was with our church youth last week and found out that most of them are allowed to read/watch the LOTR stories but not Harry Potter. Can someone explain the difference to me? LOTR seems much darker and more evil that HP.
Thanks.

Don't ask this one, but maybe something to do with that magic has a much more active frontline role in Harry Potter than LOTR.
But yeah that is kinda ...

Valley, thanks for bringing this up. The LOTR series disturbed me when I was a teenager, and more recently the movie disturbed me. Both times, other Christians raved that it was written by a Christian/friend of C.S. Lewis, so it was okay. It was wonderfully written and the movie sets were incredible, but my peace of mind is more important to me than entertainment. In contrast...Star Wars seemed inspiring.

She may want to check out the author Stephen R. Lawhead. He writes both science fiction and fantasy. Also a series about King Arthur.

i definitely second this. i really enjoyed his arthurian series. it was neat to read well written books about king arthur that had a Christian perspective.

also, i'd second the recommendation of brian jacques, the author of the redwall series. they're fun to read and are pretty wholesome.

has your friend read tolkien's other fiction? the silmarillion, unfinished tales, farmer giles of ham, etc? lastly, if her mom isn't against it, greek & roman mythology is a lot of fun, though some is a bit sketchy.

Till we have Faces is a lovely fantasy by C.S. Lewis (it was his favorite work!) and it's told from the point of view of a woman. Come to think of it, I was 14 when I read it the first time. It's my absolute favorite book.

You could also recommend anything by George McDonald (tell the mom that he was a Chistian and big source of inspiration to Lewis.) The Princess and the Goblin is good and is, At the Back of the North wind. If she's persistent, he wrote two books Phantastes and Lilith that are truly the best fairy stories ever written. You just have to be willing to stick with them for a little while.
