I need your intellect! Can you tell me why the Psalms in my Protestant Bible are numbered differently than the Psalms in my Catholic Bible? It makes it confusing when I'm looking something up in my Protestant Bible (has an index) & then go over to my Catholic Bible to check it out...

TIA!

Whoa..that's interesting..

How many Psalms are there in both bibles?

You must be using an old Bible! :)

In the old Douay-Rheims Version, Psalms 9 and 10 were counted as one; ergo, Psalm 11 in the King James is the equivalent of the Douay-Rhiems Psalm 10. (The 23rd Psalm, "The Lord is my Shepherd" is actually Psalm 22 in the Douay-Rheims.)

This system remains in place, with the D-R remaining one Psalm behind the KJV, until Psalm 147; the Douay-Rheims divides Psalm 147 at verse 11, while the King James takes it all as one Psalm. As a result, both versions number 150 Psalms---but only because the D-R combines Psalms 9 and 10, and divides Psalm 147 in two.

Newer versions of Catholic Bibles tend to follow the Protestant numbering system; the most recent NAB has the revised Psalms, and they're identical, I think, to the King James.

Totally confused now? Good. I've done my job. :D

Is this in comparision to 'splitting' the First commandment and 'combining' the last two so as to cause confusion between Catholics and Protestants. :D :D

To Jason:

Naw, the Protestants number the Ten Commandments differently than the Catholics do. It has to do with the original text of the Old Testament. The Hebrews didn't number their verses.

Just another little bit of propoganda Catholics encounter in the "Catholics worship statues" argument. Protestant apologists like to say the Catholic Church splits the Ten Commandments differently so they can pray to statues.

Or some such hogwash.

Peace be with you,

It's a little known fact that there are actually 613 commandments in the Old Testament which adherents of Judaism are to follow.

Ah-hah! There is an Oxford Study Bible at my house that my mother was using for her dissertation on something having to do with historical German catholicism (or something like that). There is a pencilled note in the front of the book that says something to the effect of "Psalms: -1 from number". I never knew what that meant (I never thought to ask her), but maybe it had to do with this.

That's the "it's disappearing from the top, so I'll add it to the bottom" principle, isn't it?
It wasn't my fault. I had to slam on my brakes one night when a cat ran in front of me, and all the hair shot forward off the top of my head and ended up on the bottom of my face.

I haven't been able to get it to move back since.

(On an unrelated topic, I lost my virginity years ago, and although I've looked everywhere, I can't find that, either.....)

THAT you can live without.

On the other hand, I lost my mind a long time ago. I let it out to wander, and it never came home again.

I sure miss it. If anyone sees it, point it towards SCal.

To Wols:

NOT funny! You just described my BOSS. I've threatened to superglue him to his chair for fifteen measley minutes so I can tell him the world is probably going to end soon, and somehow I'm not only going to get blamed for it, but he'll be guilty by association.

And if you find my mind while you're out looking...

Peace,
