For that research paper I had been prattling on about before I decided to zoom out my topic of interest from just HERV's to Hominid Evolution as a whole topic. Again, I'm curious what, if any books, on the subject would be best as a starting point? I'm willing to write about any fields of study or types of evidence going from the anthropological to the biological to the paleontological.

on human evolution, at least a starting point, i don't think there is a better book than:
Where Do We Come From?: The Molecular Evidence for Human Descent by Jan Klein, Naoyuki Takahata

On a more serious note, this is my personal favorite for Physical Anthropology:

Introduction to Physical Anthropology
by Robert Jurmain (Editor)
Product Description:
This mainstream, four-color physical anthropology text is the best selling text in the market. It presents a balanced and thorough introduction to the field of physical anthropology using helpful tables, charts, photo essays, multimedia, and an engaging writing style to bring the study of physical anthropology to life for today's student.

The Earliest Englishman by Sir Alfred Smith Woodward

I am firmly convinced that no theory of human evolution can be regarded as satisfactory unless the revelations of Piltdown are taken into account. ~ Sir Arthur Keith
