I've seen both Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke (I know I spelled that wronge.....never has been one of my strong points.. ^_^ ). I like them both a lot but I think Spirited Away was better, more indepth and I liked the characters better. But again both where really great. Isn't there a sequal to Spirited Away? Or maybe just some made by the same people....I'm not sure. I haven't seen them.

It's so hard to justify anything as 'the best ever'. I think that Castle in the Sky or Nausicaa are Miyazaki's best works, personally. I thought that Monoke's characters were very two demensional and there really wasn't someone for the viewer to indentify with. Every good work of fiction requires a character that we indentify with, imho.

Haven't seen sprited away yet but plan to within the next week.

However, it would have to be extremely well presented to beat my opinion of Princess Mononoke. I think one of the main reasons it was so refreshing to me is the vague guidelines between good vs evil. In most western movies and cartoons, as soon as a character comes on, he/she is either the good guy or bad. But princess mononoke had a very good balance with it concerning the envirment vs industry. Most would see that the inhabitants of Irontown would be the bad guys but then you slowly realize that you can't really blame the town more than you blame the people in actuality. Which makes it more confusing but ever so enjoyable. (to me anyway) The ending didn't end like the cliche 'And they all live happily ever after' either. Another plus.

And who could resist the cute little faces of the tree spirits?

Princess Mononoke used to be my favorite anime... but then I saw Spirited Away and was completely blown away. My sweet Lord, both amazing movies, but somehow Spirited Away was able to capitivate me in ways Princess Mononoke could not... Maybe it's because I spent half the time thinking "What is Miazaki on and where can i get it". Seriously though Princess Mononoke (or Mononoke Hime) is one of the greatest movies ever and deffinetely worth picking up. But it doesn't even hold a candle to Spirited Away.
