Continuing in our discussion. ;)

Chapter 3. Other Sins Forbidden.

My child, flee from every evil thing, and from every likeness of it. Be not prone to anger, for anger leads to murder. Be neither jealous, nor quarrelsome, nor of hot temper, for out of all these murders are engendered. My child, be not a lustful one. for lust leads to fornication. Be neither a filthy talker, nor of lofty eye, for out of all these adulteries are engendered. My child, be not an observer of omens, since it leads to idolatry. Be neither an enchanter, nor an astrologer, nor a purifier, nor be willing to took at these things, for out of all these idolatry is engendered. My child, be not a liar, since a lie leads to theft. Be neither money-loving, nor vainglorious, for out of all these thefts are engendered. My child, be not a murmurer, since it leads the way to blasphemy. Be neither self-willed nor evil-minded, for out of all these blasphemies are engendered.

Is this the chapter David Flusser says originally started with the Noachide Laws, or is it a different one? :scratch:

He said that? I seem to have forgotten. Hmm, interesting...I need to reread his book.

The formula for this section is:

Minor Sin ----> Serious Sins

Look familiar anyone?;)

There's a really short essay in Judaism and the Origins of Christianity that mentions a chapter of the Didache that originally started with the Noachide laws, and I think it was chapter 3. Unfortunately, that book is at home, so I can't check it out until later tonight.

:p

Okay, I'm not going to type the whole thing, though I could as it's pretty much 1 paragraph. ;) The name of this thing is The Didache and the Noachic Commandments, and it's on page 508 of Judaism and the Origins of Christianity by David Flusser.

The original wording of the Didache 3:1-6 was as follows: "My child flee from every evil thing and what resembles it. Be not prone to anger for anger leads to murder. Be not lustful for lust leads to adultery. Be not a diviner of omens since it leads to idolatry. Be not a liar since lying leads to theft. Be not one who complains since it leads to blasphemy.

He then points out that this covers 5 of the 7 laws, and goes on to compare it to Yoma 67b from the Talmud, which I'll be copying from my good ol' Soncino Talmud CD-ROM. ;)

Our Rabbis taught: Mine ordinances shall ye do, i.e., such commandments which, if they were not written [in Scripture], they should by right have been written and these are they: [the laws concerning] idolatry [star-worship], immorality and bloodshed, robbery and blasphemy.
