a much misunderstood man
A legend among dictators and something like a myth to communism supporters.

However, he is clearly a big problem for the Cuban people who still suffer under his regime.

I think that in the beginning the Castro revolution was really a good thing for the Cuban people, as they were freed from Batista who was also a dictator himself.

If you look at it now, it appears to me that Castro is doing everything to retain his power. Just that, nothing more. I can't see any political scheme which aims to revive Cuba. There is no successor in sight and I fear the worst for the Cuban citizens. There might be riots and chaos in Cuba after Castro's death.

Castro is like every dictator. Things started well and went down hill. He's not unique except that he's done it for a loooong time. Things for Libyians were great right after the Revolution, my dad worked there in the 70s. It was like an Arab Sweden according to him. As time has gone on, we get Libya's current predicament. I've heard similar things from Syrians and Iraqis about the Ba'th. Pride ran rampant in Nasser's Egypt. As time went on, they left the Revolution behind and you get a country in the pooper.

Yeah, Castro is a great leader and Cuba is a great place to live. That's why the Cuban coast guard is constantly catching Americans who are risking their lives trying to illegally immigrate to Cuba.

Wait. Strike that; reverse it.

In Cuba, the population doesn't even get basic social services. The US on the other hand guarantees every person education and medical care.

Wait. Strike that; reverse it.

Lol...true.
But of course when it comes to standard of living, then there is a huge gap between the US and Cuba...

Does the US not provide education for everyone? I got 12 years of education for free here, and so did everyone I know.

Granted, we don't send folks to college for free. But, I've seen cigar factory assembly lines in Cuba filled with folks who had those free degrees. A high school diploma, which everyone in America can get for free, is more than enough education to do mindless factory work here.

If free college and health care were enough to cancel out the living conditions in Cuba, they wouldn't have to force people to stay there.

One factor about Castro's survival that is often overlooked is the brilliance and resilliancy of the Cuban people. Cuba is a virtual autarchy since the fall of the Soviet Union, but they have been living very austerly for many decades. If it weren't for their creativeness, I think Castro would have been overthrown a long time ago.

Don't believe me? Go to Havanah and take a trip in a 1956 Desoto being used as a taxi.

its typical to see the american view point on castro as this evil thug.

i was reading an interview from an american musician and he was saying how in school in the US they slander the guy left right and centre, making him out to be some evil monster. same with the media over there. everyone seems brainwashed into believing what the government tells them. take oliver stones docu on him, which was rejected by US tv because it didnt really have the right angle they wanted i suppose (and dont believe the other excuses they give).

its ironic how in cuba education and healthcare are free, yet in the good old 'FREE' USA you have to pay for both. basically money talks, the more you've got, the higher up the ladder you can get - george dubya is a prime example.

and the living conditions mentioned earlier - wouldnt have anything to do with a trade blockade by the US would it?? which then leads to US refusing to trade with those other countries that trade with cuba??

just think some people need to read the facts, rather than believe what theyre constantly fed by media and school.

Heck no! Think is Bush dies in the next 3 years, Dick Cheney is in the seat of the most powerful man in the world. After 3 years, it's too late to matter at all. I don't want to see dumbass Dubya die and heartless Cheney achieve office. Not to mention that the doctrine of preemptive strike would be enshrined in the US consciousness for many years to come if Dubya becomes a martyr.

Milla, wasn't the embargo lifted on certain goods in 2003? Of course, from my memory, it didn't get the media coverage that it should. Whether it has or hasn't, I think it should be listed too, it has failed to achieve it's aims.

I recall that there was discussion of it and that certain items are now allowed, but I don't remember the extent. I'd welcome any sources you could obtain. But in my opinion, any embargo is nigh absurd; Cuba is no threat to the US, and in any case, embargos don't hurt dictators, they hurt the population. And I think it's clear at this point that the population is not going to overthrow Castro in return.
