Hi everyone,

I was thinking that as a part of my crusade (and it is a crusade... to run every anti-Catholic out of Toronto during the week of WYD 2002... I refuse to let the slime of the earth proselytize children, children they no doubt probably consider under the age of baptism, but obviously not under the age of proselytization... Lord knows the fit they would pitch if someone gave their children of the same age some pro-Catholic material!), I should come up with a tract that poses the "strongest" of the anti-Catholic arguments and then post Scripture that refutes them and shows them for the hellish lies that they are.

For practical purposes, this tract should be a page (front and back is possible) and so I'm limited on what lies to address. Which is why I am here. What do you people perceive as 1)the most common lies about the Catholic Church, 2)the lies that have the greatest potential of being believed by an unsuspecting and trusting individual, 3)the lies that are easily addressed in a quick and forthright manner.

Thanks in advance for helping me with this project.

1. Catholics pray to Mary
2. Confession should be to God instead of priest.
3. Practice X is not in the Bible (Mass seems to be especially popular)
4. Catholics think that Christ must be re-sacrificed at every mass; his original sacrifice was not enough
5. Works and Faith for salvation
6. Catholic Church is the "harlot" described in Revelation
7. Papal Infallibility

Just go to www.chick.com and look at "Are Roman Catholics Christians?" and "Last Rites". After you are finished vomiting you should have a nice list.

As for the most potentially damaging, I can't really say...

No, not really. If you are familiar with the lies spread by certain people (like Dave Hunt, Mike Gendron, Jack Chick) you'll see that my calling them anti-Catholic is about as nice as one can get.

I dunno...I'm a protestant wanting to become Catholic. I wasn't even aware there was such hatred as to call people 'anti-Catholics'...

Where I grew up, we called a spade a spade. No beating around the bush.

Second, there are non-Catholics and then there are anti-Catholics. Non-Catholics are happy to accept their Catholic brethren as brothers and sisters in Christ. Anti-Catholics try to poison the well (along with the minds) of everyone they run into by spreading lies against Catholics. Their ultimate goal is to get everyone who is not Catholic, to hate Catholicism. They call Catholicism a cult, they call us pagans, they say we preach a false gospel... all lies.

Do I consider all non-Catholics, anti-Catholics? Hardly. anti-Catholics are a minority. Anti-Catholics can be so-called Christians, they can also be atheists (I know more than one atheist anti-Catholic), they can be Jews, they can be Muslims. The bond that unites them is their seething hatred of Catholicism and their attempts to undermine the Church at every possible opportunity.

To NYJ:

I'd probably entitle the tract (IN BOLD FACE!)

"YES, CATHOLICS ARE CHRISTIANS!"

My daughter's personal "tantrum" towards those who wish to evangelize Catholics is the insistance that she needs Jesus "to be her personal Lord and Savior." So #1 on the list would be something to the effect that Catholics don't NEED saving, that they already HAVE Jesus, especially through the Real Presence, in their lives.

And bless you!

Peace be with you,

Anti-Catholics will quote the following verse to you:

Matthew 23:9
And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.

And from this verse they will tell you that it is wrong for Catholics to call their priests "father". However, let us look at the writings of Paul, and see what he had to say on this very subject...

1 Corinthians 4:15
For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Philemon 1:10
I appeal to you for my child, Ones'imus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment.

Hebrews 12:9
Besides this, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we respected them.

1 Timothy 2:11
...for you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you...

It is obvious that Paul had no problem referring to himself as a spiritual father to the Christians (which priests are to their Catholic congregations). Isn't this in contradiction to what the anti-Catholics tell you? It sure is a contradiction! Remember, the Bible teaches a consistent message, and if what the anti-Catholics tell you, and what the Bible says disagree, you do best to adhere to Scripture because it is breathed by God!

PS: Do you ever wonder what anti-Catholics call their parents?

First of all I would just like to say that I am once again dumbfounded at the arrogance of certain people to target a Christian community as though they were in need of saving. To target a community over-run with voodoo or what have you would be one thing.. but this is ridiculous.

Anyway, I don't know if you have addressed the issue of how some people believe that Catholics re-sacrafice Jesus at the altar but either way I hope you will let me share something with you.

In my struggle to better understand the teachings of Catholicism I have been reading and listening to radio programs and praying and this particular thing I was having trouble with because I have heard people at my own Church who aren't anti-Catholic per se--say that Catholics re-sacrafice Jesus at the altar.

One day my 3 year old daughter was looking at herself in a full length mirror. She had a look of confusion on her face and I asked her what she was doing. She looked at me clearly bewildered and said: "There's two of me." I said "NO, there is just one of you--that's your reflection.that you see".

Upon further contemplation of this I wondered to myself how many times have I looked in the mirror? Hundreds if not thousands of times? Does that mean there are hundreds of me in the world? Let's hope not. Even though it is an exactt representation of me when I look in the mirror, it doesn't mean there are two of me.

And I thought well, maybe it's the same way with the Mass. I was having a very difficult time understanding it and I believe God helped me to understand it through the eyes of my three year old.

Anyway nyj, I will be praying for you .. you will certainly have your work cut out for.

Can we send your reflections out into the world to share your wisdom????

Hon, all that the Catholics in this forum are trying to do is to clear up the misconceptions. And although none of us may be directly responsible for your recent insight (actually, give credit where it's due, it was the Holy Spirit!), it's nice to see people who open themselves to learning and in doing so, remove some of the animosity from the world.

May the Lord bless you and keep you in the palm of His hand always!

Peace be with you,

Michelle, Thanks very much for this insight. Yesterday on a thread at Interfaith I put this up. I think it also works as a way of explaining why Catholics do not offer the same sacrifice again and again. I'd appreciate some feedback from any and all:

As for sacrifices being offered again and again, this is another huge misconception. There is one Sacrifice, the Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross, which the Mass makes present in an unbloody manner. In the Mass the priest and the victim are the same as on Calvary. It is not a different sacrifice.

A very crude example, on television now you will see again and again pictures of the Church of the Nativity, where two hundred Palestinian gunmen are holed up. One Church of the Nativity depicted on millions of television sets around the world. So then, are there millions of Churches of the Nativity? No, there is one Church of the Nativity made present on millions of different television sets. There is one Sacrifice that took place around the year 37 AD, which the priest of your hometown will make present on the altar of your local Catholic Church tomorrow morning. One Sacrifice. One Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ. One Victim, the Lord Jesus Christ, made available to us now for our spiritual food nearly two thousand years after the Last Supper. What goodness!
