A BIG favor...

I'm not sure if it is OK to post this here...if not, please smack me and move me to the right place.

The main reason I am posting here is because I know there are people who can help me. I think. I hope...

Anyway, after all the time I've been on here I've really started taking an interest in science. Lots of people have reccomended books and so forth--but I'm wondering about online or at home/video classes.

I'm (though for some reason I feel a little ashamed admitting this) looking for something that would have a review of the basics..highschool stuff. You see, in school I liked science...but never really payed attention. Remembered the information for tests and then forgot it. Now I find it facinating *_* I really want to be able to *know*.

So... I'm wondering if there are any online/at home classes I could do. Mind, I'm sure there are classes availble some of the local colleges...but I'd like something that would let me go at my own pace-and I already have other school to be worrying about.

I'm not sure what 'feild' I'd like to study. Lol, I want to learn everything about everything. ^^;; So...a place with options would be nice.

I hope I'm making sense ^^;; Reply or PM me if you can help.

((Oh, I might mention...in my quest for knowledge I'll also be looking for things on Philosphy, history, anthropology, mathematics, etc...etc..etc... Of course, I know it is impossible to know everything about everything and I think I'm getting a little obsessive. lol. I have an insatiable curiousity. ))

My opinion...your local library can hook you up with a bazillion books on different areas of science...and all for free!

Ok...so I didn't make myself clear.

I'm not looking for BOOKS (though they will be a necessity) I'm looking for COURSES. Online/At home. There's a specific term that I can't remember...but I've heard of 'individual study' courses. Some also offer tutoring and/or classes on video.

Not that my local libraries wouldn't offer the info I need...but I really value the judgement of people here.

Evolutionary Biology by Douglas Futuyma. These are textbooks and will tell you everything you wanted to know, and some you had no idea of, about evolution and the evidence behind it.

Darwin's Dangerous Idea by Daniel Dennett (ignore Dennett's atheism and concentrate on his discussion of Darwinian selection)

The Biblical Flood: A Case History of the Church's Response to Extrabiblical Evidence by Davis A. Young
Genesis and Geology by Gillespie

Evolution/creationism:
Finding Darwin's God by Kenneth Miller Great data refuting the new intelligent design.
Abusing Science: The Case Against Creationism by Phillip Kitcher. Good philosophy of science discussion and creationist positions.
Science on Trial by Douglas Futuyma
Science and Creationism edited by Ashley Montagu
Science and Earth History by Arthur Strahler -- lots of geology and specific YEC arguments about the Flood.

I didn't mean I want to subsitute books. I mean, I'm just looking for a good method of self-teaching/independent study, I suppose...ya know. I mean, I could read these books and never really learn anything..ya know? Of course, I will read them and everything.

Arthur I take it you mean that just reading books doesn't fit your learning style?

That will be problematical since most of us around here are people that can learn just by reading books. Maybe you should ask some of the creationists...

lol...dunno if that'll work. You see, I actually wanna memorize facts.

I can learn just reading books. I mean...I have been self teaching myself for years. I guess I'm looking to try something more...structured, ya know? *gets really shy* I feel silly now...maybe I shouldn't have asked. I mean, here I am thinking I could possibly be on the same level with Jet and Lucaspa and everyone else..XXXP Crazy, right?

take some night classes. buy some cheap used recent textbooks(within 5-7 years). read them. ask questions here. you gotta start someplace...I knew very little about all this until I started studying. now I can read the articles in journals and understand what they are talking about. now I can do my own research. there is no leapfrog or hookedonbiology for adults. come, join us....

I have studied this stuff. I do understand it. I'm not looking for 'hookedonbiology for adults'. I'm just looking for something different that I can do by myself.

Though...I think I've changed my mind. I do find it interesting, but upon careful scruntiny I think I'm just jealous of you guys. All I can do on these boards is make witty comments and parrot a few general facts.

All any one of us does is parrot general facts. Over and over. Lucaspa has those lists on the ready, because someone always comes in and tries to decry evilution.

True there are discussions, using facts (for the most part).

just keep asking everyone here when you find something.

NOT crazy. After all, how do you think Jet and I got to the level we are at? I just gave you the way! Those are the books I read! So, there's no reason you can't get to the same level.

The problem is that there are very few courses on evolution relating to the creationism vs evolution debate.

LoL. You guys...

You know I went to the library and picked up about 10 books on biology, etc... then suddenly realized I only had three weeks to read these books XP I have a notorious habit of 'overwhelming' myself. And I expect to know things you guys have spent years studying in a week..ya know?

It's kind of like starting a musical instrument and expecting to play a difficult concerto in the same day. XP

lol-would you believe I used to have an obsessive/compulsive urge to do math?

No more of that, though. Gonna try the 'one step at a time' approach
