Magog, how do we know it's Russia?

Lets start at the beginning.

Genesis 10
1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.
2 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.
3 And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.
4 And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.
5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

Lets compare this to Ezekiel 38 & 39.

Ezekiel 38
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.

We see here that Magog, Meshech,Tubal, and Gomer are places and/or of people, that GOD has named after four of Noah’s grandsons. One of Gomer’s sons is mention also, Togarmah. These are all descendents of Noah’s son Japheth. It is accepted among most of the prophetic writers that I have read, that Japheth moved his tribe to the north. You may ask, north of where. I believe there can only be two reference points from where they went north from. It is either Israel, or from the general region of where the ark settled after the waters resided. Being what is now called Turkey. From either reference point, if you travel north you will end up in Russia.

Lets look at the names Meshech and Tubal. Today in Russia there is a city named Tubal. It is believed that Meshech may be modern day Moscow. The topic can go in several direction at this point, so I will let others reply of the thoughts. Peace, but not yet.

I'm just going to add the notes from my study Bible:

The identity of Gog is uncertain. He is often indentified with Gryges, the king of Lydia, a land in Anatolia ( modern Turkey ). In Akkadian texts from the seventh century Gyges is known as an Assyrian vassal; later legend credited him with the invention of coinage. The name " GOG " is phonetically similar to the Akkadian word for Gyges, but an identification of the two is by no means certain.

Magog.

This land ruled by Gog is also otherwise unknown from extant geographical lists or citations in ancient literature; it may mean no more than ' land of Gog '

Prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal.

Though the identification of Gog and Magog remain uncertain, the identification of Meshech and Tubal is not in doubt. From the ancient historians Herodotus and Josephus, as well as Assyrian documents from the twelfth to eighth centuries b.c. they are known to be tribes from central and eastern Anatolia ( modern Turkey ). Considerable misunderstanding has resulted from misguided speculation regarding these geographical terms. Some have identified these locations with other sites known from contemporary geography and have made them part of conjectures about later politcal events. Meschech and Tubal are said to be Moscow and Tobolsk, two Russian cities far distant from the region of Ezekiel mentions. The Hebrew word translated ' prince ' is ro'sh, and some have said this means Russia. Even if this word is a geographical name and not to be translated " prince ", it is not Russia. The name of Russia was brought into the region north of Kiev by the Vikings in the Middle Ages, and was not in use in Ezekiels time.

No time to check for typos..hope it's right.

I believe that the biblical intent is to show that Noah’s 3 sons, took their tribes and settled in the only three directions that they could have gone in. Japheth went north. He settled the regions that we call Europe , and Russia, and probably Turkey. Ham went south and settled what is now Africa. Shem stayed in the region of the origin point, but expanded in a easterly direction to what we call the middle-east. I have not come to a conclusion on the orient . I am not sure which of the tribes of Noah’s sons went out this far. It may have been settled over time, with a combination of the tribes. I am just not sure. Peace, but not yet.
