There are some people who LOVE aol and some people who HATE aol. I have aol. It's the only internet provider I've ever had. So what's the big deal about why some people don't like it? I must be missing something because I think it's just fine.

Please enlighten

Hi Lucy

Well aol's connection is typically really slow if you dial up using aol, they have so many members and advertising, etc. that makes the connection slow and the customer service is kinda tough to deal with. I have had aol for quite a while, now I have a cable connection which is much much faster and cheaper!!.

I called aol to cancel my account and they insisted on giving me 3 free months, so I said ok, so I can access aol via cable and it is much faster that way.
But aol dial up is rather slow.

But overall I really can't complain too much about aol.

There was however a billing problem I had with them a couple of years ago, but since they have been ok.

One of my friends has AOL. She constantly, and I mean constantly, is spammed with all sorts of *****graphic trash.
However, I and others who are not on AOL haven't recieved one *****graphic e-mail yet.
So they give your address to *****graphy sites, as does Yahoo now.

I haven't had a huge problem with spam.. in fact I think I went about a year before I got any kind of junk email. I think the more you sign up for things the more likely you are to get that stuff. I get it almost daily now. It drives me mad.

I agree, I don't think it is aol itself, I think it is more the sites that you visit.

On my aol account I never get spam, never, I almost never sign up for useless free offers, or give out my email address to non secure sites.

On my wifes aol account she gets powerspammed! But thats because she will sign up for free offers and other things and give them her email address resulting in SPAM!

AOL's browser doesn't render things properly. That's one big reason people complain. Ever get an e-mail that has a link and a second link saying "AOL users click here?" AOL's browser won't render some scripts and things, so forms and things don't always work. AOL's technology is also far behind other browsers and e-mail programs.

AOL is fine for AOL's section of the web, but for the rest of the net, I'd much rather use a regular ISP.

uh...me, me, me! I'm not trying to be harsh, but users on AOL are handicapped when they have to use something else other than AOL. On AOL, everything is there, IM, emails, web, favorites, etc. Once the users get out of that environment, they're crippled. "I need my favorites", "I need my IM", etc. AOL is like a small window to the real world. Try not to get stuck on it, I guess!

AOL charges a fortune for internet service. You can get unlimited internet service for lots cheaper with other companies out there. If you're going to spend that much for AOL, you might as well go the rest of the way and get grab a DSL offer. I use the AOL instant messenger all the time...it's a piece of cake to download and it's free, and you can use it with any internet service. So it's pointless to buy AOL just for the IMs, if that's what anybody is doing. Is there anything special anybody can point out about AOL besides an outrageous price?

like i said i had aol only cause wife insisted she loved the graphics......but since a yr ago i've gotten so much junk mail from them it was a waste of time deleting all of them ...My son created an isp for his bosses company and I got a free isp to get on line and was keeping aol for wife but since they raise price from 999 a month to 1499 I'm canceling .....well i'm outta work why pay for what i have for free:)

I have been an AOL user for two years.

I guess I can't really compare it to anything else because I do not know anything else.

It is expensive compared to other internet providers.

If it goes up too much more in price I think I will decide to look around for a less expensive internet provider or spend a little more for an instant connection.

I am a former AOL Subscriber, but I quit for several reasons. One, it is soooooooooooo slooooooooowwwwwwwwww. Second, the software has gotten to the point where it was impossible to totally get rid of it. Third, like people have said, AOL's proprietry interface and software hurts it terribly for me. I will admit that I do use AOL IM, but the AOL as an ISP. forget it!!!

One year of AOL service came free with my new computer, but when the year was up, I switched, because I found AOL to be frustrating to use.

Months later, they are still calling me once a week or so to try to get me to switch back. And they get agressive, telling me that they are going to restore my service for three months whether I like it or not. I tell them NOT to do that. sigh

I used AOL for awhile from home, because I was having problems connecting to the dial-up service on campus. I never had much luck with it...it was very, very, very slow. When I finally went to cancel it, they insisted on me talking to tech support about my problems. I said, no...I don't need the internet at home. You just kinda have to keep telling them no. A lot. :)

My parents got AOL free for 1 year when they bought their new Gateway computer. Version 6.0 was fine, but then they were told they had to upgrade to 7.0, and that constantly froze, crashed the computer, and caused other problems. After the free year, they got rid of it because it was more expensive then a local ISP they've now signed on with.
