Difference in prophecy and revelation

There is what one might call a rule of thumb. That is - "All prophecy is revelation, but all revelation is not prophecy"

Lets look at the nine manifestations of the Spirit -

The first three are the manifestations of worship -

1. Tongues
2. Interpretation of tongues > These three all fall under the category of "prophecy"
3. prophecy
Acts 2:4 thru 17 - "And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my "Spirit" upon all flesh : and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams"
But this verse 17 tells us about more than prophecy, it also tells us about visions and dreams, and it also is telling us that sons and daughters will do this. This is where we get the next three manifestations -
4. Word of Knowledge
5. Word of Wisdom > These three are "revelation"
6. Discerning of spirits

These come by visions and dreams - Lets look at such a record in the word - Acts 9:10 "And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias ; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold , I am here , Lord" - then read down to verse 12 - "And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight" - This verse is telling us that Saul saw in a vision ( this chosen vessel - verse 15 - Saul saw in a vision before Ananias layed hands on him - verses 4 & 5 & 6 , this vision was a verbal, audible, vision ) In Saul's case he was not just chosen before the foundations of the world, but he was a chosen vessel > one who would be called an Apostle. These two men both received "revelation" and the "revelation was carried out by "both" men. Revelation is "instruction" and this "instruction" is the fourth and fifth and sixth manifestations of the Spirit - as listed above.
The next three manifestations are what are called "result" manifestations. These are given to bring the "result" of the "revelation" recieved.
7. Miracles
8. Healing > These three are "revelation" also
9. Faith

A record to understand these would be Acts 10:17 - "Peter "doubted in himself" > vere 19 - "the Spirit said unto him, Behold , three men seek thee" - look back at verse 7 and the three men were two servants and a soldier. - In verse 20 the Spirit told Peter - "go with them doubting nothing": for I have sent them" This is "faith" given in order to fullfill the "revelation" - In Acts 4:22 - we see the miracles and healing , and you will notice the word "shewed". This "revelation" is "shown". Whereas the revelations of # 3,4,5 might be shown or might not be shown. Look back at Acts 3:2 thru 16 - in verse 6 & 7 - we have all three manifestations 7, 8 , & 9. In verse 16 - "faith" - also note the word "by" in this verse - this is tranlational error, as it should be the word "through". "Faith" comes "through" Jesus Christ ! Manifestations 7, 8 & 9 use the manifestations of 3, 4, & 5 in conjunction with each other.

So to recap - 1, 2, & 3 are Prophecy and 4, 5 & 6 , 7 , 8 & 9 are "revelation" some to understanding and some to revealing ( shown ) - "The result" of the "revelation".

All disciples ( servants of the Lord ) can operate all nine manifestations.

But, a Prophet is one who brings forth a message from God and for God. A Prophet who brings forth this message comes from the "building" and not "from" the body. They also receive "prophecy" and "revelation". An Apostle is also from the "building" and brings forth "revelation" only. Ephesians 2:20 and Ephesians 3:1 thru 5 key word in verse 5 "revealed".

I have been looking at the section of Acts 2:17&18! I often have had my heart and mind stop and ponder what the word declares in Epesians 3:5 " Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto His holy Apostles and Prophets by the Spirit." Have you worked the words Apostles and Prophets? I have not myself, do you know if this is referring to the gift ministries? I am still reading and looking for more of your sharing of "Mysteries within th Word of God" I printed the one that is dated 11th Feb. 2002 and have gotten very blessed and spiritually excited to look into more!

God bless you greatly in Christs name; Davidhenry

Hi David:

Yes, I have worked these two words Apostles and Prophets in Ephesians 3:5 & Ephesians 2:20. They refer to ministries given certain men , which will be overseerers in the Church.

Look closely at what it says in Ephesians 2:20 --- The first thing that should stand out ,is the fact that this is a building, and this verse is talking about the foundation of that building. It is built upon the Apostles and Prophets and Jesus Christ being the chief corner stone.

The "building" deals with the undefiled - pure - Word of God.

Notice in verse 21 it states - "IN whom" ( In whom - who ? --- Whom - Apostles - Prophets & Jesus Christ) all the building ( the undefiled - pure - Word of God) fitly framed together (dealing with the Word of God) groweth unto a holy temple in the Lord"

The word "temple" or the word "building" in the NT - means - undefiled - pure - Word of God.

Notice also in Ephesians 4:11 it tells us that God gave Apostles, Prophets, Evagelists, Pastors, and Teachers -------- For --- the perfecting of the saints ----for the work of the ministry ----for the edifying of the body of Christ.

#1 - Building
#2 - Body of Christ

The building is "for" the body !

In Verse 14 tells us that these ministries are "for" --- "That we (the body) be no more children tossed to and fro with every wind of doctrine , by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive"

#1- In the building Jesus Christ is the cheif corner stone, and #2 - in the body he is the head of the body. Notice the reversal from lowest to highest.

Read I Corinthians 3:16 & 17 , and while reading these two verses, in your mind, change the metaphor , the word temple , to the words - "undefiled - pure - Word of God" --- And see if makes more sense than it ever has before in your life ? !

Glad to have you aboard on this forum ! :)

God Bless
