I agree that a person must get a solid foundation built before working on isolating muscle groups, but I don't agree that doing bench press and squats on the same day is the best way of weight lifting. A person can do this, but I feel that separating major muscle groups on different day provides better growth.
There are differing opinions sledhead.

I feel that for many people, working out more than twice a week even on different muscle groups as you mention is too taxing on the nervous system.

I don't know who Stuart McRobert's is
Stuart McRobert is the publisher of Hardgainer Magazine which is a magazine dedicated to genetically average people. He has been in the weight training game for a long time and really knows his stuff. Look into the books I mentioned as they are excellent at giving you an overall view of weight training and the realistic approach to it.

God Bless

Donyjoseph: I hope we are all body builders. The body that we should be building is the Body of Christ. But, to get down to the human body, there is an herb that works well in union with soya amino acids to build more muscle tissue instead of fat or sugar. It is called MACA and is grown in Peru. No other place in the world is able to produce it. It is used for improving male potency, mucle tissue and female fertility. But never make the mistake of thinking that there are majic bulltets out there. What we become is a matter of Pluses and Minuses. It is a Minus choice to use a man-made hormone or any man made pharmaceuitical. Learning about the herbs in your own living environment is like learning the Word of God. Each plant is a complex word of God that targets different systems in the body. They don't conform like man-made chemicals. They offer words that cells use to transform their lives. Much like each of us does, either to give life in the story we tell or to take it.

One way to distinguish a source as a truth source or a lie source is to check out his/her words. If they speak of benefits to life through molecules of amino acids, fats or carbohydrates, they are reductionist thinkers and their words are mis-leading. If they speak of benefits in ideas, inter-related word presentations, based on an organizing principle, then they can be useful. Life Itself is not just a series of molecular inter-actions, but of living unit interactions that express an opinion based on an organizing principle. In the end, every decision we make is a faith decision in the person who is giving us words from his/her interpretation system. Churches and Universities, Professional Organizations and Civic Ones, are persons too. It is a blessing to be able to find a teaching authority one can trust to be a God Word Meaning confirmation authority. We most certainly cannot trust our own selves to be the confirming authority in our lives for truth. "Submit one to another."

"Working out" has some potential negative affectors and consequences. If one has a bad bite or overclosed jaw position and/or dental work on the teeth, and they are in contact, muscle efficiency can be very poor, introducing much waste material, toxin and poison into the blood which will result in the cut off of blood to various body parts, not to mention the possibilities of a serious injury if contact sports are involved. Negative emotions have the same muscle efficiency effect. There are other things that can affect muscle efficiency such as kind of food intake or drugs, physical position, etc.

Neither genes nor germs have a predetermined affect on us. There is no such thing as genetically average or normal. Each of us is the product of the thinking choices we've made about how to interpret information and the service it provides to meet our personal needs. Cells in the body make thinking choices too. They either work for the body goals or they work against them. Cells that choose to work against the goals of the body are called pathological. Their word production is non-sense. And the body organizes against the circulation of non-sense in the blood. However, this very defensive action can be the reason for death and dying. The work of a healer is to make sense out of non-sense.

you ever saw a fat ectomorph? it isnt very pretty

i found dave drapers website and after reading his words i decided to start training first thing in the morning in december 2001. took so getting used to but now i love it. since then i've only missed 2 workouts whereas before it was getting to be 2 workouts a month.

Sounds like the early morning workout works well for you. Having a workout partner has helped me a great deal.

I have not heard the lifting more than twice a week is hard on the nervous system, nor have I heard this from lifting friends. I believe lifting the same muscle group more than twice a week is unproductive.
What exactly do you mean taxing on the nervous system?
I'm going to take a look at Hardgainer Magazine.

What I meant to say was that there is systemic fatigue from working out with weights, meaning that not only are the muscles fatigued but so is the body's system. When systemic fatigue is not allowed enough recovery time we end up overtaining or the immune system gets weakened and we catch a cold or a sickness.

On a side note: You cannot get Hardgainer magazine in any stores that I am aware of. You have to subscribe to it through their headquarters which is in Nicosia, Cyprus. Here is their web site if you want to take a look:

I see what your saying. The system is not getting enough recovery before the next workout. Definely varies from person to person. I found personally that if I'm not eating property, I'm more prone to catching something.

One need to have a good diet (not food reduction, but quality food)

Exactly!
In Stuart McRobert's book, "Brawn" he discusses super-abbreviated training of sometimes only a few exercises performed once a week!
This of course is for super-hardgainers who can't seem to grow on any other programs, but he says it does work for some people.

I agree completely my friend. ;)

Hi, this is my first post! A real newbie...

I would have to say I am into body building a bit. I have been reading Hardgainer for about 2 years and applying abbreviated training to my own routine. I'm 43 and I lift in my basement twice per week - hard abbreviated training 30 minutes per workout - get out get on with life with my family. I also incorporate cardio work 3 days per week at about 25 minutes. I eat good quality food with an occassional scoop of whey protein which I buy from a christian run health food store. I always wondered if bodybuilding was a self centered activity for me. I know many hard core lifters can be self-centered and/or obsessed with lifting. I also know that as a christian I want to be strong and fit with the body God has given to me. Taking care of our bodies can be a good witness as opposed to letting ourselves go and slamming french fries because we are lazy (the American epidemic). I also look at it as a hobby. People who say cross-stitch or collect music aren't usually frowned upon because of their outside interests so why should people who happen to like physical fitness? OK, I don't want to rant or offend anyone  It's good to know there are other brothers and sisters who spend time in the gym. I haven't read all the posts in here but does anyone know of any Christian based lifting websites?

God bless!

I have been weight training for 30+ years and I enjoy it today as much as I did when I began in High School while playing football. After highschool I spent 10+ years in the USMC and continued weight training. I recently joined a gym again. It's geared more for serious weight training and/or body building. My wife purchased the membership for me as a Christmas present. I had been weight training at home for many years with extensive equipment I had purchased over the years. I must admit I sure do enjoy going to the gym vs. working out at home. I get a much more complete workout and it's never too busy the times I go to the gym. The hours of the gym include around the clock (24 hr operation) Monday through Friday. I am back on a six day a week schedule alternating muscle groups from day to day.

I always pray before I go to the gym thanking God for the precious gift of health to workout. I ask him to help me to get a good solid workout, too.

It's a joy and a privilege to still be able to weight train after so many years.
