Dont forget that Jesus came to teach the law of God. He taught us to obey the commandements. Pork was forbidden by God and This was one of his commandments. Therefore if we are eating pork we are going against The teachings of jesus and disobeying Gods law.

Jesus taught that the entire law was summed up in loving God and our neighbor--no mention of pork. Paul taught in Rom 14 that the kingdom of God was not about eating or drinking. Peter was taught in a dream that nothing is unclean to eat when he was sent to the house of Cornelieus..

Yet so many people seem to forget that...

Also, that passage with Peter isn't just about clean and unclean foods, but clean and unclean people as well.

Because in reality, there were no unclean foods. God asked the Jews to keep kosher laws to discipline them against Gentile practices. This however never did work very well.

And I should also add that even back then, unclean didn't equate to sinful.

Read the book of Galatians
Galatians 2
11*But when Cephas ( Peter ) came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face because he stood condemned. 12*For he used to eat with the Gentiles before certain men came from James. However, when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he feared those from the circumcision party. 13*Then the rest of the Jews joined his hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.

The occasion for this letter was a controversy that developed among the churches in Galatia, and especially the one in Antioch, concerning the matter of requiring Gentile Christians to obey the Mosaic Law. One law very much in question concerned circumcision, a religious rite that meant for Jews much the same thing as baptism came to mean for Christians of a later period. The Christians whose background had been in Judaism could see no reason why this rite should not be required of all Christians, as it was for Jews. As they understood it, the laws given by God through Moses were binding for all time and could never be set aside by human beings or by any set of circumstances that might arise.

These church visitors insisted that the law concerning circumcision, as well as the other requirements of the Mosaic Law, was binding on all Christians, including those coming from a Gentile background. Furthermore, they launched a vicious attack on Paul because of his attitude about this matter. They even went so far as to charge that he was an impostor and was guilty of misleading the membership of the churches. In response to these charges, Paul wrote the Epistle to the Galatians.

Things were forbidden for a reason in those times. Look at it this way: In and of themselves, something edible (or something in general) is not sinful. However, like Romans 14 states, something is considered bad or sinful to an individual because he or she has determined within themselves that it is so for personally concluded reasons, whether based on their personal interpretation of the bible or some other basis.

My family acutally does follow those rules, but not terribly strictly. We do it because God made those laws for our health. Eating pork, shellfish, and other bottom-feeders like catfish isn't good for you because those animals eat other creatures excretement and other unsavory things.

I don't think God still expects us to do that, but it isn't a bad idea. I still love shellfish and we eat it on occasion, but mostly we do without. Turkey is a nice substitute for a lot of pork products like bacon or hot dogs too.

I think the key here is to care for our bodies, as they are temples for the Holy Spirit, but not get caught up in "eating our way to heaven." We mustn't rely on our own habits and good deeds for salvation- that it found in Christ alone!

Staying away from pork and shellfish is a matter of good health! That goes for McDonald's and ice cream, too!

Nobody remembers the numero uno reason for kosher foods except battie. They were health rules, they made them mandates of God to make sure people would obey them and NOT DIE lol. They couldn't cure pork well, so Trichonosis(sp?) would've ran rampant if they ate it. Shellfish couldnt be kept either, and it even says you cant eat vultures!!! Why? Because they feasted on carrion and brought disease. One must realize that once we advanced in our techniques in preserving food, these are nul and void.

Peace :crossrc:

They're not totally null, though. I suppose it's pork isn't quite as unhealthy as it used to be, but after looking at some of our water I can definitely see why eating bottom-feeders is bad. In fact, I heard a news report a year or two ago saying that no woman of childbearing age should eat any fish from the Potomac (near where I live). That river is just far too polluted. My uncle, who worked for the CDC, told me one day never to eat stuff like catfish for those same reasons. He doesn't study the kosher rules or anything. I'm not even sure why he brought it up now, but it helped confirm for me that the stuff in the Old Testament wasn't just crazy laws.

Sculpturegirl raises a good point about MacDonald's too. If the Bible were written in our times, I wouldn't be surprised if God added "Thou shalt not eat fast food" to that list of restrictions. It really is just about common sense healthy eating.

As I said earlier, I'm certainly not fanatical about it--I like junk food as much as the next person--but I try to learn from my parents' example and cut back on the bad stuff a bit.
