I had an argument about this with some uncles at Thanksgiving dinner. Too bad I wasn't aware of this report then.

The overwhelming majority voice their objections to what they see as one-sided support in favor of Israel and against Palestinian rights, and the long-standing, even increasing, support for what Muslims collectively see as tyrannies, most notably Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan and the Gulf states. Thus, when American public diplomacy talks about bringing democracy to Islamic societies, this is seen as no more than self-serving hypocrisy.'

That is my argument almost verbatum.

Not to argue the report, it must have been based on much more than what I have learned about the muslim world on tv, the net, as well as my history books.

But first off, who are the they? Is they the man on the street? Is they the imam spouting hateful words from the mosque? Is they the brain-washed sucide bombers? The al-Qaida? Hezbollah? Muhammed himself?

To say that they hate our policies, and not us, as in us human beings who do not, nor ever will follow their warped religious beliefs, is rationalizing a dangerous and intolerant religion.

[sarcasm]Why do you people hate America. George Bush made it clear that we are hated for our freedoms. To say otherwise is to support the enemy. Why are you even trying to understand why they hate us? Are you a terrorist sympathizer? [/sarcasm]

I guess it's took much to imagine that these people may not have been polically motivated. I'd guess that they are not since this report wasn't released until after the election.
Good luck trying to remove the blinders some people have about the Bush administration. You would think that Bush came down from Mount Ararat himself with a mandate from God and anyone who would criticize him is worthy of death by way of committing blasphemy.....

While I agree that it is not our freedom per-say they hate I have a question for you guys I hope you can understand and answer. Why on earth do you decry the US and it's policies up one side and down the other but when it comes down to these people who saw off peoples heads you somehow don't have the same fire and anger over that? It is almost like most of you out there stop short of saying we deserved Sept 11th and 3,000 people deserved to die. Don't get me wrong, Im with you on the "goverment was wrong" tip. I agree totally, but why do you spend so much energy screaming at the top of your lungs ''YOU GOVERMENT PIG'S!!!!!!!!!'' and then when Al quada, Hamas, and all the other's blow up children, saw heads off, slaughter loads of people, put rat infested bombs on, filled with nails, you don't even see a post on how horrilbe that is? I don't understand. If you hate ALL INJUSTICE than why do most of you put almost all of your anger behind the US and Isreal? If we get blasted by another plane in the side of a building it will be "Oh it's because of our policy in the middle east" if Isreali women and children get hit by a suicide bomber it will be "Look at how they treat the palastinians". Are we not better than that? Can we not take a look at the big picture and hold EVERY ONE WHO DOES EVIL to account? But you wont. You simply can't. It's a hate America's goverment first thought process. You simply can't Hate what terrorists do. I dare one of you who hates this war and this president(wich is fine) to come on this board and list 10 crimes the terrorists have commited and list 10 things the Arab world should change. After that you can list ALL the crimes the US has commitded and ALL the things we could change. I doubt you can do it because you are so non-objective about what's going on you can't see the nose on your face. Let's hear it. Before you comment on my post just make a list.

Well, if someone were to create a thread detailing exactly why the murderers were immoral, ignorant, and unjustified. I would probably post this picture. Everyone here agrees that those people are fanatical, sick, and and array of other adjectives.

Since no one here actually supports them, there is little productive that could come of the discussion. Not to mention that the reason many people debate is because of an enjoyment of the competition involved. Thus without an opponent it isn't much fun.

However there is a healthy mix of people who agree and disagree with US foreign policies and are willing to defend this position. This is why there is so much more dialogue on the forums about that topic. Naturally, when debaters become frustrated that their opponent does not see the logic of their position the fire and anger you described comes into play.

Well, too many people have their egos wrapped up in Bush to ever criticize him. If you criticize him, then perhaps you criticize yourself as well.

I still find it difficult to believe that "people hate our policies, not our freedom" even has to be said. Who on earth hates someone "for their freedom"? It's the weirdest freaking notion I've ever come across.

If you say it enough times, it becomes the truth. At least thats the theory behind this kind of propaganda.

...seems that not everybody is falling for it though.

Terrorists are bred from economic and strategic policy. Policy puts in place the catalyst for groups who feel the world took a dump on them, giving them something to rally around. Without interventionist policy, most terrorists would instead be called revolutionaries or rebels, as they would not have a reason to protest beyond their own geographic/political borders.
