RIAA personnel browse the p2p listings like anybody else. They create a list of songs shared at which IP address. They go after the IP addresses with the largest number of songs. They file charges and with a court order go to the ISP responsible for that IP address. The ISP is then forced to show the user information for the person who was using that IP address and the given time.Unimatrix said:"that's a violation of privacy rights."...not really...If you're on Kazaa and you start downloading from somebody, that person can CLEARLY see who is downloading from them and quite simply notify your ISP...However, if they went looking around your PC for stuff then that is invasion of privacy, but you're connecting to a public area, which puts a wet blanket on the privacy defense...
Somewhat of a public privacy thing. Everyone can see everyone's files, except they're finding your IP then reporting you to your ISP.
