Obviously, there are the lifestyle changes: diet, holidays, Shabbat, perhaps the way you dress. But what does being Messianic really mean to you? Is it just these obvious changes, or is there something more? (I think there is, I'm just having a hard time putting my finger on it.) Do you feel a person has to embrace orthodox Judaism? Is it a love for Torah? What do you feel you need to teach your children that will set them apart as Messianic?

This is mostly just a brainstorming thread. I would really appreciate lots of input!

TIA,

Okay for me it started with a love for Yeshua. Luckilly I had a messianic friend who actually showed me alot. It basically comes down to this.

Yeshua=Torah=G-d

Well, I love Yeshua, so that means I love the Torah and G-d. Simple, basic, but easily understood.

But lots of people love Yeshua/Jesus, even if they don't understand him in his Jewish context. Is it all about Jewish context? And just b/c we may understand more of the Jewish context than most, how much is enough to be considered Messianic?

TIA,

But it isn't just about loving Yeshua, it is about loving what Yeshua is. He is the Torah, G-d in the flesh. He was there in the beginning. He was with HaShem when the law was sent down. His commandments are HaShem's commandments and if we love Him, then we love His commandments. Which goes back to loving HaShem's commandments, which are the Torah. So for me, it isn't because of Judaism that I follow the commandments, it is, because I follow the commandments I look Jewish. Does that make sense?

For me I would describe it as my effort to reconcile the totallity of Scripture. That is my goal.
By that, do you mean trying to figure out how the Tanakh and the BC fit together? And what else may still be to come?

Well, for me being messianic means a love for adonai, and by loving adonai we must respect and love his commandments to us, which is his torah. I am trying hard to learn all the laws that would pertain to myself, and hebrew.

And speaking of others not understanding(I think someone mentioned that earlier), last night I got into a debate with a DVEOUT catholic....yeah, he pretty much regurgitated what was told to him to me about how "the jews hate jesus...they denounce his divinity...they don't have the eucharist....etc. etc. (insert pretty close to anti-semetic remark here)". He also said that the messianics speak blashphemie and commit sins that cry to heaven. I gave him some scripture backing me up, and also asked him to give me scriputre saying that Yeshua abolished the law of Moses and all that, nope! he couldn't do it, but continue to rant and rave....Then I suggested to him to read the new testament with a jewish mindframe and context for what was going on, then he literally blew up in my face. I swear some people just don't listen....

Matthew 7:6 "Don't give to dogs what is holy, and don't throw your pearls to the pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, then turn and attack you

Just so noone mistakes me, this is the verse that I recite to myself whenever I get into a conversation like that.

To me being Messianic means to:

1. Follow and walk in Torah
2. In light of the words of Moshiach
3. Love his people as no one truly does
4. Love what he is doing in Israel ( bringing back his people as promised)
5. Pray for Israel, Jerusalem and all "pre" believers every day and also for those who curse them
6. Being a witness of the word, not just saying who you are or what your faith is, but living it in every thing you do from the time you rise up until you lay down.
7. Growing in full understanding of who our G-d is and how much he loves us and searching out his truth with every breath, to do what He wants me to do k, not what someone else said its OK to do.
8. To be connected , truly. all the way back to that mountain

I guess in many ways I look at it as the Jewish faith in the Messiah, rather than a gentile faith in the Christ.

Messianic faith is the complete bible, the fullness of the Lord. Christian churches often just don't "get" the old testament. Orthodox Jews don't understand that the Torah was completed and G-d gave himself in his Messiah to personally forgive them.

As one who is part-Jewish, it was the harmonizing of the conflicting Judaism and Christianity that I really always understood in my soul were never truly in conflict. It is completeness as a person, in my faith, and a fuller understanding of my Lord and Creator.

For me it is not the name MJ as much as it is where I am spiritually. I am with Shaul who didn't go for this name identification game. This is a way of Life in Yeshua. It is fluid and moving ever closer to the perfect in God. I can not point my finger at another fellow sojourner and say that because they are so far down the path that they have not seen the light. It just may be a lot dimmer for them. I can praise the Lord for what little light they do see to even find a small part of the path. If on the other hand they reject the light, then I will know that it is their choice to be where they are. I can pray for them and move on in the light Yeshua has given me.

Keeping Torah, living Kosher, are all part of learning how to be good citizens for the Kingdom to come. We are to learn of the world to come, and worship our King of Kings. The world will be shocked to find out how "Jewish" Yeshua and His Father is but it will be no surprise to us, who have accepted Yeshua and His Father at face value and accept them at their Word. What is spoken of in the Word is not a theory, or theology, it is real and it will continue to be for all eternity. It is the world to come. It is the way it should be, in us and in the world we live, and it will be when Yeshua returns.

We are to learn to be a part of that world now in this world, as a witness to this world that it can be done, especially as they declare with louder and louder voices that it can not be done. We are to be living proof of not only its possiblility but it's actuality. It is our realization, that gives birth to others seeing what we see. It is the baptism of fire that Yeshua said he had kindled and it will spread like wildfire as we understand more and more.

One day we will be like Shadrac, Abendigo, and Meshack who could walk in the midst of fire. One day we will be like Peter and walk on water. One day we can tell the mountain to move from here to there and it will move. One day we will call forth the dead and they will rise. One day we will be faith do mighty things in the name of God. Our faith is growing and will grow richer and brighter, not because of our works, but because of Yeshua being able to work through us. We will become changed because by the renewing of our mind, and the transforming we become changed in His Likeness. We have walked in THE WAY, and we have walk THE TRUTH, and we walk in THE LIFE (forever and for eternity starting now).

Yes.

There is this train of thought that says blah, blah, blah. And that train of thought that says blah, blah, blah. But in order for many of those definitions to work there are typically MANY things that are not considered.

Acts 3:18 NKJV
But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.

Acts 3:18 JNT
But this is how God fulfilled what he had announced in advance, when he spoke through all the prophets, namely, that his Messiah was to die.

Within the traditional train of Judaism the concept of Messiah is not that he would die (I have talked with many who think this is human sacrifice). Within the traditional train of Chritianity the concept of Messiah is that he has no other purpose (I have talked with many who take a statement in Acts 3:18 and accept it as truth and never bother to figure out why or how they saw this).

One day I'd like to meet you for coffee and pick your brains! There is so much to learn, and it can be so difficult to find this information.

Do you have any books you would recommend?

TIA,

Seriously :) I spent over 5 years just comparing version, translations, everything I could get my hands on from the east and from the west. Used my Strong's til it darn near wore out. I forever will be grateful for such tools.....

and I LOVE coffee (and pizza ;) )
so which translations/versions do you prefer?

what are some of the most mind-boggling connections that you have recently discovered?
