After describing Christ and his power as Behemoth in Job 40, the next chapter describes Satan and his power as Leviathan... first the confirmation of the identity in Isaiah:

"In that day the LORD
with his sore and great and strong sword

shall punish leviathan
the piercing serpent,

even leviathan
that crooked serpent;

and he shall slay the dragon ....."[Isaiah 27]

"Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?
.....
Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?"

- [Note: Satan asks God if he can tempt e.g. Job]

"Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
........
Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?

None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.

I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
........
His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.
One is so near to another, that no air can come between them."

- [air represents the spirit, indeed they are the same word in e.g. Greek]

".......
His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth."

- Satan is the source of 'fire', represneting trial, tribulation, temptation]

".....His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.
When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.
The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: ........

.......Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
He beholdeth all high things:

he is a king over all the children of pride." [Job 41 ]

"Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness."[Psa 74:14 ]

Psa 104:26 ......there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.

It appears that there is more than one kind of Leviathan. One is a harmless sea serpent who plays in the depths and swims by twisting his body (like a snake), and the other is a euphemism for satan. Just like not all snakes are satan, Leviathan is not, of necessity, evil, nor does he always represent satan. Sometimes a sea serpent is just a sea serpent.

Crooked serpent is what it says in the Bible.

I cannot see God putting a hook in the jaw of a harmless sea snake [not that they are harmless, mostly very venomous]
...get real, the Bible isn't about God going sport fishing, but about the contest between God and Satan for the hearts and minds of men!

Well, that's part of it, but part of it is God asking man to look at the wonders of this world that he has created and worhship Him for what we see.

I LOVE the part about "that Leviathan...to play therein." I picture a bog, frolicking sea serpent, and I am amazed and delighted by God, who could make such a creature to play.

Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan THAT CROOKED SERPENT; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

Job 26:13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.
