Church of Sweden says yes to gay marriage

Aww, don't be so gloom and doom! According to Snyder v. Phelps, you have a First Amendment right to voice your opinion, no matter how ignorant it might be. So cheer up!

Why Can't We Drill in ANWR?

You can still have blowouts and explosions that can injure or kill the drilling rig operators. Offshore drilling is pretty dangerous; inland drilling is only a bit less so.

    Republicans and Lightbulbs

Please answer the following to show your grasp of this issue: 1. About how much mercury is in a typical low mercury cfl? 2. About how much mercury is in a typical fluorescent bulb? Has this bothered you? Why or why not? 3. About how much mercury is in 2 kilograms / 4.4 pounds of tuna? Has...

Please learn a little patience. First give people a chance to be rational actors.

Cfls tend to come in 3 colors now: cool white (it sounds like you're thinking of these), soft white, and warm white. You should check out the latter 2.

Check Home Depot. I saw a 4 pack of cfls there for $8.

    Republicans and Lightbulbs

You know, the obsessive focus on CFLs by conservatives and libertarians not only ignores the mercury that has been lurking in standard fluorescent bulbs, but also that LED bulbs are starting to become more and more commonplace. LED bulbs are getting cheaper all the time, consume a fraction of...

Not another person whining about mercury! It's amazing how widely that bit of fearmongering has spread.

Since it's a fact that cfl bulbs are cheaper in the long run and take about 75% less energy to operate, what is the rational reason to still prefer incandescent bulbs?

So if I see you as a human being and if you saw yourself as a woodchuck, then this would be a legitimate difference of opinion, and not a sign of irrationality on your part. Very interesting.

    Republicans and Lightbulbs

The funny part is, if Americans had acted in enlightened self interest and on their own purchased the more energy efficient (and cost efficient) bulbs, legislation banning incandescent bulbs would be unnecessary. Unfortunately, all too often people are not the rational actors required for the...

Essentially a variant of "your right to swing your fist ends at my nose." Do conservatives and libertarians no longer believe this?

    Republicans and Lightbulbs

Exactly. Even before there was a push to ban incandescent bulbs, people who had no problem with standard fluorescent bulbs were whining about mercury. The mercury issue is just a feeble attempt to distract from the underlying reason -- a bratty "you can't tell ME what to do!" (Perhaps with a...

Typical conservative fearmongering. I get the low-mercury light bulbs, which contain 1 mg of mercury. By comparison, the fluorescent lights in my office have 9 mg. And these are low-mercury fluorescent lights; others can get even higher. Fluorescent lights have been around for decades...
