I think that is one thing of it. In American culture we aren't used to it, so we assume the worst but in many places, social nudity is common and not a problem, so to claim something like that is inherently sinful is culturally ignorant at best.

I have an almost identical experience. I took my GF to a nudist place in AZ and she had no problem taking off her clothes immediately.

The secret I have found is to reapply every couple hours especially when you have been in the water and you will be fine. I have however seen a lot of older nudists with skin like leather from so much exposure to the sun.
