KJV vs Modern Versions 06
Regarding the third column, and the meaning of the words in II Timothy 2:15
Actually, they do.
That verse was printed on a plaque on a prominent wall at my Bible college. Of course we tended to interpret it to mean "Study your assignments, because by studying them you are showing God that you truly are a good workman." However, it eventually dawned on me that the meaning of the verse is actually "Study how to show yourselves approved of God. . ." The KJV rendering is perfectly correct, we just tended to misunderstand it. The other renderings make the meaning a little clearer, but they are all saying the same thing.

Sorry, friend. They are not saying the same thing.

Be diligent to present yourselves” (NAS) and “Do your best to present yourselves” (NIV) are not saying the same thing as the King James that says, “Study to shew thyself approved...” (KJV).

@Bible Highlighter But do you see my point that the KJV rendering (which is correct) conveys the idea of "study how to shew thyself approved" and not just "study your assignment in order to shew thyself approved"?

You said before the Modern Translations are saying the same thing. They are not. The King James says it correctly and the Modern Translations got it wrong. We are to study the Word of God (which today would be the Holy Bible). This is a command that is changed in Modern Translations. There are other commands that are altered in Modern Translations, as well.

@Bible Highlighter OK, but you still didn't address my one specific point, which is that the meaning of "study" is that we are to "study how to show ourselves approved of God. Not just the act of studying, but studying with the purpose of finding out what we should do in Christ's service. Is that the way you understand it?

@Evan Jellicoe

We are not under the Law of Moses. Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. So yes, to study the Scriptures is to be in service to Christ. This would include studying certain doctrines, or truths, commands, etc. for the application of our life in service to Jesus Christ under the New Covenant or New Testament.
