  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How does that verse answer my post? I wrote that when Jesus is called the Chief Cornerstone, the context shows that He is the Cornerstone of His church. You answer with a verse from Job, not about the church, or Jesus, but about the earth.

This verse shows that there are foundations for the earth.

This verse shows that there are foundations for the earth.
But it doesn't answer my post, which said that, contrary to what you wrote, the verses that talk of Jesus being the Cornerstone are about the Cornerstone of His church.

There is a downward “bottomless
pit.” This is not possible on a sphere.

Rev 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star
fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was
given the key of the bottomless pit.
Rev 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there
arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great
furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by
reason of the smoke of the pit.
Rev 9:11 And they had a king over them, which is
the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the
Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue
hath his name Apollyon.
Rev 11:7 And when they shall have finished their
testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the
bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall
overcome them, and kill them.
Rev 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not;
and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go

I reckon all these verses are enough to be going on for now.

It's not me saying it.
It is - because you are choosing to put random verses from different books, together - as if to form one statement.
It's like the old chestnut;
"Then Judas went and hanged himself"
"Go and do likewise"
"what you are about to do, do quickly".
Which makes it look as though the Bible condones suicide.

OK, but where do those verses say that the bottomless pit is part of the earth? The earth's shape makes no difference to the existence of the bottomless pit.

You can post all the verses you want.
If you take them out of context and don't explain how they teach flat earth, they're meaningless.

I could quote your post from a few months ago where you said "sorry" to God for doubting the astronauts who walked on the moon, and a more recent one which said that the astronauts are liars . Unless people knew that, in between the two, you had changed your mind and said "sorry" to God - again - for your original statement, they would think you contradict yourself and are seriously undecided.

Context is very important.

So why post it in answer to my post which didn't even mention the foundations of the earth? And I still don't know why you quoted verses about Jesus being the Chief Cornerstone of His church, as if they were talking about the shape of the earth.

They are not out of context , how can there be a bottomless pit on a ball ?

Don't be silly.
I'm not being silly. That is the result when people take things out of context.
I'm surprised that you can't/don't understand that.

People take things out of context all the time. You only have to look at newspaper headlines, which may quote part of a speech to get people's interest. The reality could be that that person didn't say those things at all.
One famous example was many years ago when the newspapers reported that the Bishop of Durham said that the resurrection was "a conjuring trick with bones": headline "Bishop doubts resurrection of Jesus."
What he had actually said was "the resurrection is MORE than a conjuring trick with bones" - I read his sermon in the Church Times. I didn't much ike the guy or some of the things that he stood for, but on that occasion, his words were misquoted, and taken out of context, to make it look as though a senior Bishop doubted the Gospel.

But the verses you quoted do not say that the bottomless pit is part of the earth, do they? The phrase "bottomless pit" occurs 7 times in the bible:

Re 9:1 Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit.
Re 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit.
Re 9:11 And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew [is] Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon.
Re 11:7 When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.
Re 17:8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
Re 20:1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
Re 20:3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.

None of those verses says that the bottomless pit is part of the earth.

Your previous verses were out of context.

Where does it say that the bottomless pit is on the earth?

Well what is the bottomless part of if not the earth ?
In a similar way to the location of heaven, the location of the bottomless pit is not mentioned in the bible. So it is an unwarranted assumption to say it is part of the earth. Indeed, what shape would the earth have to be to contain a bottomless pit? Certainly not a flat disc.

Well what is the bottomless part of if not the earth ?
No idea. But you're jumping to conclusions.

You quoted the verses about the bottomless pit to try to "prove" that the earth is not a globe - your words were "how can there be a bottomless pit on a ball?"
Revelation does not say that the bottomless pit is on the earth - end of, full stop. So it doesn't prove what you say.
Now, your only answer is "it must be; where else could it be?"

It's not on, or part of, the earth.
Revelation does not say where it is - or, in fact, how we should interpret it.

So where is it ? & what sun was darkened ?

King James Bible
And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

So where is it ?
I don't know - even assuming it's a literal place at all.

The point is that you quoted the verses to try to prove that the earth is not a globe.
Those verses don't say that the bottomless pit is on the earth - and your statement, "it must be", proves nothing.
You have jumped to the false conclusion that the bottomless pit is on the earth, and have quoted verses, which do not mention where it is, to try to justify your false conclusion.

The foundations of the earth are a
reality.

Psa 82:5 They know not, neither will they
understand; they walk on in darkness: all the
foundations of the earth are out of course.
Isa 24:18 ... and the foundations of the earth do
shake.
Jer 31:37 Thus saith the Lord; If heaven above can
be measured, and the foundations of the earth
searched out beneath.
Psa 18:15 Then the channels of waters were seen,
and the foundations of the world were discovered at
thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of
thy nostrils.
2Sa 22:16 And the channels of the sea appeared, the
foundations of the world were discovered, at the
rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of
his nostrils.
Pro 8:29 ...that the waters should not pass his
commandment: when he appointed the foundations
of the earth.
Mic 6:2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD'S
controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth
for the LORD hath a controversy with his people,
and he will plead with Israel.
Pro 8:29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that
the waters should not pass his commandment: when
he appointed the foundations of the earth.
Zec 12:1 ...which stretcheth forth the heavens, and
layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the
spirit of man within him.
Isa 48:13 Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of
the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the
heavens.
The foundations of the earth are the Laws of Physics established by God in His creation. Prove me wrong.
