  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It just keeps getting incredible what the Pope is backing away from. Well, looks like the Pope is retracting more than a few things, now they are backing away from the apparitions that have been claimed of Jesus. Catholics believe that figures such as Jesus and Mary can appear supernaturally, known as apparitions, to share religious messages, inspire devotion, or call for peace. But now the Pope seems to be taking steps in backing away from this long held conviction.

"Jesus may answer prayers but he has not made special appearances in a small town in the north of France, the Vatican said on Wednesday.

In a new instruction approved by Pope Leo, the Vatican's top doctrinal office said stories of appearances by Jesus in the town of Dozule, in Normandy, were not to be considered genuine by the world's 1.4 billion Catholics.

A Catholic mother in the town had reported seeing Jesus 49 times during the 1970s, and said he had dictated a series of messages and told her to build a 7.38-metre (24.21-foot) cross on a hillside in the town.

"The phenomenon of the alleged apparitions ... is to be regarded, definitively, as not supernatural in origin, with all the consequences that flow from this determination," said the text issued by the doctrinal office.

Catholics believe religious figures such as Jesus and Mary can make supernatural appearances, called apparitions, to offer religious messages, create new devotional practices or make general appeals for peace.

The Vatican has a formal evaluation process for assessing claimed appearances, and it warns against use of alleged phenomena for monetary gain.

The Vatican also recently issued a decree clarifying the titles Catholics can use for Mary. That text said Mary cannot be called the "co-redeemer" of the world, since Catholics believe Jesus alone redeemed humanity by his crucifixion and death."

Personal or private revelation do not have to be believed. The Catholic church teaches that all truth comes from Scripture.
You are correct about private revelation. As to the second, to clarify, the deposit of the faith, the Word of God, handed down from the Apostles includes Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.

You misunderstood the story. Apparitions and other alleged miracles are investigated by the Catholic Church, this particular apparition was judged to not be credible. As was stated by the previous poster, no apparition has to be believed. That means as a Catholic you don't have to believe what happened at Fatima, or Lourdes, or Knock. You may be wise to believe, but you are not required to do so.

Are there traditions that are not in Scripture?

If so, what are they?
Realize the Catholic Church was in existence before one word of the New Testament was written. When the Church chose the new books of Holy Scripture (liturgical books to be allowed to be read at the mass) all of the books had to conform to Church teaching. An example of something that is in Sacred Tradition but not the Bible is the affirmation by the Church of the four Gospels being inspired by God.

There are no apparitions of the Blessed Mother that the Church requires a Catholic to believe. But some apparitions are widely believed, I don't recall coming across a practicing Catholic who denies what happened at Lourdes or Fatima. How many there might be I don't know. There were some obvious fake stories, so the Church set up a commission. The commission may decide an apparition is worthy of belief or not worthy of belief, or issue no opinion.

1) Does not answer my question: Are there traditions that are not in Scripture?

2) The apostolic teaching (2 Tim 3:16) of Christ (Lk 10:16) is that "all Scripture is God-breathed" (2 Tim 3:16), referring to the OT.
However, we find that some of the NT (e.g., 1 Tim 5:18, 2 Pe 3:15-16) was already considered by the apostles to be equal in authority to the OT Scriptures.

Yes, absolutely. I just gave you an example. The acceptance of the four Gospels as being inspired by God is a Tradition and not contained in Scripture. There is no mention of it in the Bible.

Is there any mention in the OT of the OT being inspired?

There is more in the OT than in the NT. But clearly not all books contain such a claim, and of course a book that was in consideration for the Bible but didn't make the list could have falsely claimed being inspired. But there you go, we know the canon from Sacred Tradition, not from the Bible itself. Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture are said to go hand in hand. Some of the teachings handed down through the Apostles, the deposit of the faith, are quite explicit in the Bible while others are not.

Please, you have never seen how the Catholics in Latin countries hold apparitions to be. So whether evil spirits or demons appeared as 'apparitions' at Loudes or Fatima or in any of the multiple sightings, they will believe it, especially when it comes to Marian apparitions. Its all spiritualism and of another source as Mary is dead and buried in the ground, so it is not her that is showing itself. Here is just a bit of 'aspirations' and beliefs the people hold that you are dealing with...

...Mexico City (Tepeyac Hill), in 1531, Our Lady of Guadalupe came, averted holocaust, stopped the merciless sacrifices of innocents to a blood-thirsty pagan god, and created Family.

Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal - In Paris, in 1830, She came to a little postulant and gave her and us hope for the world - "Come to the foot of the Altar, great graces will be poured out to those who ask for them."

Our Lady of La Salette, in 1846, She wept and prophesied what disaster would come to pass if we did not convert.

Our Lady of Lourdes In Lourdes, in 1858, Mother Mary came and introduced Herself as the Immaculate Conception, affirming Her son - Blessed Pope Pius IX - and his dogma of the Immaculate Conception, which dispelled the heresy of Pantheism.

Our Lady of Pontmain - In Pontmain, in 1871, She came and ended the Franco-Prussian War; She gave us hope.
In Knock, in 1879, although She said nothing, She spoke volumes: Protect the Eucharist. If you destroy the Eucharist; you destroy the Church. Protect the Word, which is in danger. If you destroy the Word, you destroy the Church. Protect the family; if you destroy the family, you destroy the Church, you destroy the world.

Our Lady of Fatima - In Fatima, in 1917, Our Lady warned that unless we convert, Russia would take over the world. And but for Her precious son, Pope John Paul II, this growling bear would have done just that. In Fatima, She warned us that unless we change, many souls would be lost; and that unless we pray and sacrifice many would go to hell. Did we listen?

Our Lady of Beauraing - In Beauraing, Belgium, in 1932, Mary asked the children, "Do you love my Son?" To which they responded "Yes!" She then asked, "Do you love Me?" Again they responded "Yes!" She turned to them and said, "Then sacrifice yourself for Me." Our Lady was telling us to sacrifice, because She knew that it is only through prayer, fasting and sacrifice can we overcome the onslaught of the devil and his cohorts. Twelve days after Our Lady said good-bye to the children in Beauraing, Our Lady came to Banneux, fifty miles from where She appeared to the children in Beauraing. Our Lady came and pleaded: "Believe in Me and I will believe in you." Our Lady, 16 years after Fatima, appeared in Belgium and again warned us. Did we listen? Do we listen?
Mother Mary went to Belgium and warned us; and in less than a month, the path to total world domination was paved. The world had not listened to Mother Mary and the table of contents of the devil's book to hell was getting near full. Hitler became chancellor to Germany and began his conquest or scorch campaign. World War I was supposed to be the war to end all wars, and here it was, and another World War was on the horizon. World War II was upon us, before we knew it. Everything moved so fast. People were not praying, not yet. They thought the answer was accommodation and compromise. Powerful countries compromised smaller nations. After all, it was not them. The enemy was not threatening them. All of a sudden, it was their turn. Did we then go down on our knees?

When the Lord comes, people will be so busy running to the malls, trying to buy up happiness, they will miss Him and His salvation completely. Is that why Mother Mary keeps on appearing? These Marian Apparitions of Our Lady continue to weave a pattern of salvation if heeded or destruction if not. We do no listen!

I don't know what a "Latin country" is. But yes there have been many apparitions and I don't know how many associated documented miraculous cures. Here is some documentation relating to miracles at Lourdes::

Abstract

"In April 1962, Vittorio Micheli, a soldier in the Italian Army, developed rapidly increasing pain in his left buttock region. X-rays of the left hip showed osteolysis involving the ilium and the roof of the acetabulum. A biopsy of the gluteal muscle showed cells of a sarcomatous character. He was not deemed to be a candidate for medical intervention, so neither radiotherapy nor chemotherapy was offered to him. In May 1963, racked with pain and unable to walk, he made a pilgrimage to Lourdes, following which he was cured of his sarcoma. His case was reviewed by the International Medical Committee of Lourdes in 1969 and in 1971. There was unanimous agreement that this was a medically inexplicable cure."
The Miraculous Cure of a Sarcoma of the Pelvis: Cure of Vittorio Micheli at Lourdes - PMC

"Carrel's case should seem important to Catholics, but not so much for the convincing of non-believers. Most of these will persist in their unbelief; Carrel's book will at most give second thoughts to some of them. Most of them will continue in the tracks of Emile Zola, who upon arriving at the Lourdes train station in 1898 declared to an army of newsmen that he would not believe that a miracle had occurred even if it did under his very eyes. (In fact, a famous cure did occur at Lourdes while Zola was on his pseudo-scientific fieldtrip.)"
