Because you came from another country.

Like my mother and father did.
I know, BUT in order to earn your American cititzenship you must pass the citizenship test a portion of which requires most applicants to read, write and speak a certain level of basic English.

That’s what I’m saying. This whole profiling thing is based on nothing but racist assumptions. You can have illegals who speak perfect English and American citizens who don’t know a lick of it.
It's not profiling. They were stopped for traffic violations and I asked their status. They were not afraid to tell me because they knew nothing was going to happen.
Some people here illegally do speak English well. There was usually one person who spoke for the group

Do you know what a naturalized alien is? There’s not just citizens and illegals. There’s all sorts of different legal statuses in between where someone could be here legally and not be a citizen. People from other countries could be here with a work visa or they can be a student attending university here. None of those would be illegals and they have no requirement to speak English to be in the country.

In any case, nobody needs to prove their citizenship to a local police officer during a basic traffic stop. That is dystopian.

In addition to the point made above, you can also be exempted from the language proficiency requirements due to age.

Why? What prompted the question? Did you ask everyone you stopped or just the ones you felt don’t belong here?
They were not afraid to tell me because they knew nothing was going to happen.

Precisely it’s a meaningless to assume someone is here illegally if they don’t speak English.

Because it’s none of your business.
They don't have to answer and it was my business, it's a crime to be here illegally and I had the option of giving the information to immigration.
It's just like searching your car, I couldn't search it without probable cause but I can ask you and if you give me permission I can search it.

Precisely it’s a meaningless to assume someone is here illegally if they don’t speak English.
What prompted the question was a van full of people with no ID who couldn't speak English.
Nothing restricts me from asking the question.
If they had chose not to answer there wouldn't have been anything I could do about it.

I didn't ask for proof I just asked the one who could speak English how many were illegal.
He could have refused to answer, said he didn't know, or lied but most of the time he just told me.
He knew nothing was going to happen.

When was the last time there was a bomb threat in your city? Springfield has received more than a dozen in the four days following the debate. These threats started immediately following Trump's statements on Tuesday night, so yes, he is responsible.
I'm more of the view that the people who made the bomb threats are responsible.

Really? How many threats were they getting weekly in Springfield before Trump made his comments?

Changing the subject to poor old victim Trump isn’t going to help you look any better trying to defend this nonsense.
Wow, I didn't know that picking up a rifle and trying to assassinate a former president (and current candidate) was something the compassionate, democracy-loving democrats would see as something so trivial.

I’ve never had to prove my citizenship to buy alcohol, board a plane or when I’ve been stopped by the police. What totalitarian country are you living in?

Local police aren’t immigration officers and have no right or jurisdiction to probe into someone’s legal status in the country. Sorry, this isn’t communist Russia or Nazi Germany.
Nor does it need to be in order for a country's borders to be protected against invaders.

How will they know from a simple traffic stop though. Do we really want to check immigration status by appearance alone?
The fact that those who are here illegally should in no way have a driver's license in the first place should be a good start. If no license, then it could raise the question of whether or not they are here legally. Perhaps that's why Democrats have been pushing so hard for illegal immigrants to have licenses. The ability to vote is not the only thing a driver's license allows an illegal to do.

Whatever it is, it’s irrelevant to this thread.

Why would someone need to speak English to be a citizen? That’s not a requirement to be an American.

How does speaking English even prove citizenship? They could be Canadian. They could have learned English in another country. I think people should speak Spanish to prove they’re American. It’s just as valid as speaking English in this country.
Gee, I wonder how things got to be that way......

Police officers can have conversations and ask questions.
They can't force people to answer but nothing prohibits them from asking.

I prefer that those on the road have a license regardless of their immigration status. The licenses given to illegals and others with legal status state that they are not citizens.

They aren't even supposed to be in this country, let alone in a vehicle driving on our streets.
