Jesus died before the Sabbath in Luke 23:

55 The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. 56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

After the Sabbath, Mark 16:

1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.

Did they purchase the spices before or after the Sabbath?

It could be both, Gill explained:

though the women might have bought some on the preparation day, the day before the sabbath, the same evening that Christ was buried, yet, they might buy more for the same purpose, after the sabbath was over.

Yes. They could have bought the spices on Saturday night, after sundown. And then on Sunday AM they went to the tomb to find it empty.
