  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

UK will extradite Americans for social media posts

All the responses were good and proper. As for the British officials, they have a long history of hate speech and mass murder.
Funny thing is that USA lawyers are called Esquires, which is a title of British nobility, I suspect they would give a Yankee a poor defense.
The War of 1812 was fought because Congress passed a Constitutional Amendment to ban lawyers (Esquires) from public office. Washington was burned along with the amendment. And very few people will mention it.
Wow, that is very interesting Mr. Yuwang (cool username by the way). Yeah, lawyers have "Esq" after their names. Hey, at least their are no more wars in the US, yet.

Not if it's applied to a non-UK citizen for words uttered on non-UK soil. That's the point.
Yeah. Hopefully, that law does not apply to non-UK citizens on non-UK soil, then the UK government would be overreaching outside their jurisdiction.

Very few people will mention it because it's not true.

Thank you for your input. I do agree that folks who make threats or racist comments should go to jail, or get slapped with a fine. Could a judge send someone who says "The Tories suck" or "The Labor party sucks" on Facebook to jail? That would be a harsh sentence for saying a political party is not good.

I don't know about racist comments. Sure, no one should say racist things, but I think arresting someone over racist comments would be easily abused. Is there a difference between complaining about Mexicans stealing jobs and someone trying to incite the Klan to go lynch black people?

If you criticize Muslims, are you a racist? Some say yes becuase most Muslims aren't white. Others say no because Islam is a religion, not a race.

Should someone have their life ruined and even potentially face legal consequences just because they said something dumb and just didn't think about how it came across?

Racist thought is (and should be) protected speech.
Doing violence to a person (mostly) because that person is a different race, then a “hate-crime” can be charged, it’s always secondary to another criminal (or civil) offense.

Sorry, but foreign officials threatening US citizens with prosecution for acts on US soil removes what little humor I have. I hope everyone here knows that Congress doesn't "pass" amendments. Congress proposes amendments. After congress proposes an amendment, it is sent to the states for ratification. Two thirds of the state must approve of an amendment for it to become part of the US Constitution. I hope everyone here also knows the British burning DC was in retaliation for the US burning Toronto. The storm that put out the fires in DC and tornado that went through the British camp are more obscure.

Honestly, what the British do in Britain is their business. I may not agree with it, but it's not my country and if you go there and run afoul of their laws, too bad, so sad. It's when the British threatens to impose UK laws on US citizens outside its borders that it becomes every American's business. Yesterday I wondered what NATO says about war between member nations, because if the UK tries such, it could come to that.

I agree, hence why a racist comment should get a fine of half-an-hour's wage, but a threat to a group of people could get a higher fine (2 days wages, or a short period of time in jail), while a major threat and evidence for acting on that threat could get longer jail sentences.

But, I do agree with that last sentence of yours.

In the US ... supposedly ...

Under current First Amendment jurisprudence, hate speech can only be criminalized when it directly incites imminent criminal activity or consists of specific threats of violence targeted against a person or group.

So, just questioning some things .... if the UK or any other country takes action (relating to the OP- extradition) then which country's "laws" prevail?

So ... extradition ... here is a link ... it is Wikipedia though so is not necessarily totally accurate but non the less ...

Extradition - Wikipedia

We are living in very strange times.

The first amendment is tied to our government's non-interference in free speech.

I don't know who would extradite....seems like it would be government interference.

So you think US citizens can do what they want to citizens of the world and there's no repercussion for it? Interesting.

I have no idea what it even means.

Is this for US citizens who make statements online while in the UK? Is that who they're threatening to extradite?
My understanding us that it is any statement made online.

Sounds like some thing the mustache man would do, or someone like that.
Jailing for words? unless you are hurting someone in some way you shouldn't go to jail.
And who says they going to stop there, the list can get bigger and who put a stop in what they ban?.

I think they are getting out of hand, the other time they dragged an autistic girl from her house, because she said the police officer 'looked like my lesbian granny'

It was the US that declared war in 1812, and they lost, or at least drew with the white house burned down.

No they won't. As extradition treaties require the offense to be recognized as such in both countries. The first amendment places a very high bar for any such extradition.
I would say there are conditions that exist for this ... example: "hate crime" .... recognized in both countries and occurs on social media.

Indeed, but the first amendment makes it a very hard bar to cross.

Should you be free to actively encourage people to burn down buildings containing children? In the USA are you allowed to promote the murder of people through arson?
