  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Luke 6:
46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:
48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.
And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it,for it was founded on the rock.
49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth
without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell.
And the ruin of that house was great.”

Are there eternal homes without foundation for those who heard and believed, and did not obey?

Ezekiel 18:30 “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,”
says the Lord God. “Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin.

Every believer who ever reads these statements always and only "initially" thinks they are the ones who built upon the rock.

BUT Jesus clearly said we should hear and apply ALL His Words. My eventual conclusion, after really listening, is that the not so fun parts apply to all of us as well.

We are all going to leave here with our earthly house in ruins, literally returned to dust/sand/earth, the clay pot shattered and destroyed.

So, when a parable is read, take it all in. Apply BOTH sides of these equations. And savor the aroma of it. It is truly beautiful

The answer to your question: "ruin" means lake of fire judgment. Here is the clear description:
2 Thes. 1:7-8 "...the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God, and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus."
Whoever does not obey the gospel is headed for complete ruin, which means being thrown into the lake of fire (Rev. 20:15).

Well what our Lord is referring to is how those who reject the Gospel and hate God and insist upon resisting the love of God will not have a part in the life of the world to come, because such close proximity to God would be unbearable for them, and as a result, as a mercy, God will consign them to the outer darkness. The weeping and gnashing of teeth was interpreted by the Early Church Fathers as being chiefly the result of missing out on the joys of everlasting life in the light of the World to Come, illuminated as it were by the direct presence of God - that missing out on that would be the worst possible fate imaginable. But we are warned there are people who will choose that, despite being given every chance to receive God’s love.

I rather like what CS Lewis had to say on the subject, “the gates of Hell are locked on the inside.” It is the hardness of the hearts of men that condemn them to suffering, both in this life and in the next.
