  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Your avoidance is noted.
You get what you give.
They didn’t pay me anything.
Why? According to you, nothing is free
But if you are indicating that your education, while making minimum wage, was from your folks, then only. But it sure didn’t seem like that was what you meant.
My education was not paid by my folks. whatever that means. Do you understand what an apprenticeship is?

You haven’t explained what this so-called free education was. So I’ll have to reiterate that it cost someone something until shown otherwise.

You explain very little. The posts are usually one line questions. It feels more like an interrogation rather than a discussion.

Why do Americans always get their knickers in a knot when someone suggests an increase to the US minimum wage?

Because we can't let the poors have nice things. If we let the poors have nice things, then they'll start to expect to be treated like decent human beings and like their lives actually matter. We can't have that, not when we are trying to create a society with functioning Social Darwinism where only the rich matter.

Apprenticeships are typically covered by the sponsoring company or organization. They're popular in the US for several trades including construction and culinary studies. If you avoided financial hardship you were fortunate to do so.

Exactly. In fact, I was paid under minimum wage, but the schooling was still free to me. It was culinary for me.

Why do people think “free to me” is free?

If someone else absorbed the cost on his behalf it is free for him. Why are you nitpicking this? It isn't complicated to understand.

I just got home from a visit to San Diego - all the prices were so much higher than last year - especially fast food.

This is a bubble that will pop.
Its gotta be tough l owing that families may have a slightly better life but you ha e to pay 80 cents more for a big Mac.

Is that trade off not worth it for you?
Do you think business owners should have rights? Like, maybe, the right to set wages?
I. I am so dissappointed that People foeget what happenned in America at the turn of the 20th century. Back when bosses and owners DID have complete power over wages and working conditions. The rights that workers had to fight for.

All I can assume it was their ancestors who were dragged from their mills and were beaten senseless by thwir employees for poor conditions and wages.

How can the poor stop being poor if they get paid minimum wage?
How can you stop a misanthrope from abusing, threatening and and intimidating someone while also paying them faaàr less than the minimum wage.

You're "they will just go work" somewhere else idea is so delightfully innocent and devoid of the ugliness of the world, it's like a child holds a thought so pure.
That really is the crux of it. Once you start comparing the subsidies, forgiven loans, and other government handouts that are considered acceptable vs those that aren't, it becomes apparent that they're largely divided along lines of whether the recipients are the right kind of people, worthy of being promoted by society.

I feel like when working class people argue against minimum wage they are actually covetting those people and sinning.

I think there is the belief that 1 person paying $10,000 for a health procedure is functionally, and in all respects, ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENT than 100,000 people paying a dime each.

Why do Americans always get their knickers in a knot when someone suggests an increase to the US minimum wage?

This year the Australian minimum wage was increased by 3.75%. Last year it increased by 5.75%. In 2022 it went up 5.2%. These increases are not just limited to fast food workers or service staff. ALL workers on the minimum rate get a mandatory increase. That’s around 25% of the workforce.

Whenever I mention this on CF I get inundated with suggestions that increases to the minimum spell death to businesses along with rampant price increases.

Australia has been reviewing and resetting its minimum wage annually since 1907 and remains one of the strongest economies in the world.

American workers are happily drinking the capitalist Kool Aid supplied by your capitalist dominated economy.

The result – a ridiculously low minimum wage and Dickensian working conditions.

I work in a warehouse and it is no paradise but it isn’t 1865 either. I also buy a lot of cheap, adequate items at the dollar tree stores which used to be $1 until the inflation cycle eliminated that former guarantee. No more of their items are made in China than any other place. My tax refund disappeared, auto maintenance is way more expensive, groceries are much higher and etc. I felt I had more purchasing power at a lower wage prior to the current inflation. Of course, an avalanche of “statistics” will probably be dumped on me saying otherwise.

It’s not nitpicking. The idea of student loan forgiveness, food stamps, jacking up minimum wage, etc., always costs someone else something. If you want to give away your money, that’s your business. But taking it from someone to give to someone else is theft, no matter how pretty a bow you put on it.

There are non profit organizations that provide apprenticeships to offset the expense of culinary school and it's a long time practice. This has no correlation to loan forgiveness, food stamps, etc. You're barking up the wrong tree.

I support loan forgiveness and social aids to those in need. I'm sorry you feel otherwise. Perhaps if you changed your tune you wouldn't feel the pinch.

Because that's what it means to them. We all agree that benefits come at a cost to somebody. Nobody thinks that benefits come out of thin air at no cost to anybody--despite the fact that you like to pretend that we do.
