While most of this news is now a year old, there were some updates to details recently and I thought this might be a bit of an interesting topic for those interested in firearms.
Back in 2023, Finland and Sweden decided to adopt the same new rifle standard for both armed forces, namely the Sako M23 platform. The article below contains more details on the firearm, but I'm still trying to find an English language article on the recent updates here.
While previously Finland has already chosen the sniper rifle (to be operated alongside the Sako TRG M10 chambered in .223 Lapua Magnum) and DMR variants of the M23 to be purchased for use, chambered in 7.62 NATO, the assault rifle version is now entering testing in Finland. First by staff and later this year by conscripts. There are currently two versions entering evaluation, one chambered in 7.62 NATO and the other in 5.56x45. A variant chambered in 6.8 is also considered, though not being pushed yet as FDF wants to see more information on how the round performs. My own opinion is that they want to see how the new US battle rifle works with the round.
