I've heard them say their goal is to condition kids to feel comfortable with them, since kids are naturally creeped out by them. If they want to volunteer they could help feed the homeless, do meals on wheels for shut-ins, help in shelters and food banks, help in senior centers etc etc.

They aren't dressed as Jackie Kennedy or Tootsie. They're bearded men in bizarre getups holding little kids in their laps. People have been fooled into accepting it because it's supposed to be progressive and possibly mainly "because the GOP is against it".

No, it's the activity and the associated time, place and audience that makes it relevant hence the question re: reading to any other audience besides children.

Awesome. Now let's ask why the media focus on drag queens at schools. Is it because it's a new phenomena? I certainly didn't see this when I was a kid in school. It's worth considering these things when trying to discuss others points of views if one is actually interested in another point of view.
