Jesus said, "If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed" John 8:36.
The words "Law" and "Religion" are closely related. When one is doing their religion, they are doing the law. When one is doing the law, they are doing their religion.
Jesus said, "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" John 8:32.
Free from what? Free from sin. Before one can be free from sin, they have to be free from the law. The law is what promotes sin. Many believe that the law keeps us from sin, that is the devils lie, Paul said, "But sin taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence (Lust) For without the law sin was dead" Romans 7:8.
There is something in our human nature when told not to do something, we want to do it. Adam and Eve are a good example. God said to Adam and Eve, "Don't eat of the tree in the midst of the Garden" Genesis 3:3. No one cared about the tree in the midst of the Garden until God said, "Don't eat of it or touch it". Eve could not wait to go check out the tree in the midst of the garden. Eve said, "It is a tree good for food and pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise" Genesis 3:6.
Where there is no law, there is no sin, Romans 4:15. Where there is law, there is sin.
Why did Jesus teach the law if the law causes us to sin? One of the purposes of the law is to reveal sin. Paul said, "For I was without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died" Romans 7:9.
Jesus makes us free from sin by making us free from the law. This is why the scripture says, "Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes" Romans 10:4. Law and religion promotes sin. If you want to be free from sin stop trying to keep the commandments. If you want to be free from sin stop trying to be religious. This is why Paul said, "The just shall live by faith" Romans 1:17.
The Just live by faith in Christ and his Gospel. In the Gospel, "We are complete in him" (Jesus) Colossians 2:10. This means that that law has been abolished, Ephesians 2:15 and all sin has been atoned for, 1 John 2:2. Those that believe the Gospel have ceased from their own works (religion) and have entered into his rest, Hebrews 4:10.
