So if you need to know the contents of the nuclear secrets to know what valid reason he might have for keeping them? Let me be the first to offer the idea that he had no valid reason to keep nuclear secrets.

Do you KNOW what is on the documents?

It seems that you are awfully sure about what's on the documents.

I have made no comments about the contents. I simply stated regardless of the contents I can think of no valid reason to have them. How about you? Can you think of a valid reason for him to have these documents?

They will look cool hanging on the wall next to his Time man of the year covers at his golf courses?

Yes giddy. The very fact that we have people on speculating on what the documents are and that he's selling nuclear secrets to our adversaries is evidence they are just hoping beyond hope that what he was doing was really really bad.
Or maybe they are worried and hoping beyond hope that he wasn't doing that.

I am personally hoping very much that Trump wasn't giving nuclear details to Russians or Saudi Arabia or Iran, Iraq, North Korea etc. I really don't want more countries getting this sort of nuclear technology.

Unless some President in the future declassifies the documents, we will never know what is on those documents. We do know that some of them were classified as TS / SCI. Under no circumstance should such documents ever leave a secure government facility (Mar Lago was not a secure facility).

The complete guide to every excuse Republicans have made for Trump's theft of classified documents

My oh my. It’s been less than a week since federal agents raided Donald Trump’s Florida beachhouse in search of classified documents that Trump stole from the White House, but Republicans have come up with a truly dizzying number of excuses and smokescreens trying to cover up his wrongdoing—often several each day. Honestly, it’s been somewhat hard to keep track of them all, especially as many contradict one another, but we’re here to help. Below, please find our day-by-day catalog of every pretext Trump’s defenders have tossed out there.

It'll take you awhile to get through them all. TL, DR: the FBI planted them, but Trump had already declassified them by thinking about it, but didn't get around to it on paper because he was so busy with the January 6 insurrection, but hey! it was only one box of classified stuff and you can fit that on your phone along with other nuclear secrets, which never should have been classified in the first place, and anyway Obama and Hillary.

Regardless of any reasons he might have, he's not allowed to keep nuclear secrets. Keeping such records is forbidden under the Atomic Energy Act. A president can declassify information but is expected to consult with each cabinet head whose information he wants to declassify to ensure he's not going to harm the country by doing so. There is no indication Trump did that with each piece of classified information found at his residence. Furthermore, regardless of classification, some records still cannot be removed due to different laws like the Atomic Energy Act mentioned above.

Another law — called “gathering, transmitting or losing defense information” — states it is illegal to remove documents related to national security from their proper place if it could risk the security of the country, no matter the classification level of the information. Then there's the Presidental Records Act which requires certain records to be kept by the National Archives.

Some Republicans are claiming Trump declassified these records before leaving the White House. There is no record of that and even if he had he would still be in violation of at least 3 laws named above. At the very least Trump was very sloppy about taking home documents not taking care to go through them and make sure he wasn't taking anything he shouldn't have. It's been over two years since he left office and he never voluntarily returned anything saying "Oops, I shouldn't have taken this...sorry." I don't know why he took home these documents. Some of them make no sense for him to have kept. I read a quote from him saying he kept things that would be used in commemorating his legacy (presidential library?). Even still, it's pretty obvious you can't display records regarding nuclear energy or weapons or foreign intelligence. I don't know that Trump had malicious intent but throughout his presidency, he was known for tearing up and throwing out classified documents sending aids scrambling after his garbage, and taping back together papers so they could be archived. I don't think the man cared and felt he was above the law. While he may not have had criminal intent, he still violated several laws. It could be written off as an honest mistake if he didn't have a history of flaunting the laws regarding classified information. He is not defending himself claiming it was an honest mistake. Instead, he is charging partisan politics and a corrupt FBI. Not the actions of a contrite man who unknowingly took home classified documents.

1)I don't know that Trump had malicious intent...

2)He is not defending himself claiming it was an honest mistake. Instead, he is charging partisan politics and a corrupt FBI. Not the actions of a contrite man who unknowingly took home classified documents.
When I read line 2 it is solid reasoning. So, I think line 2 supersedes line 1, since line 2 describes an obvious malevolence against any who would stand in his way.

They have the documents. Why the stalling on issuing charges? Are they trying to figure out a good storyline?

...They must know how important the story will have to be, knowing the popularity of this and how it will be inspected and poured over for many years to come. No mistakes can be made!

Hopefully when Trump supporters attack Congress or the FBI building, they can do so in a civil manner.

Hopefully that never happens. I just wish things could have been handled differently from the start.

The FBI could have treated President Trump as someone willing to cooperate, initially, rather than someone who needed to have his home raided without warning. I just feel like this was overly aggressive, and so, oftentimes aggression breeds more aggression - this does not unite America.

...And I only say "President Trump" because it's a traditional courtesy.

You mean like giving him a chance to return all the documents? Then when they found out his lawyer lied to them giving him a further two months when they subpoenaed the documents? Then when that finally failed issuing a search warrant? That kind of treating him as willing to cooperate? How much more lenient should they be to someone who willfully broke the law?

No. You do not understand.
President Trump is to always be the victim.
Always.

I'm not so sure things happened the way you're describing it.

I wonder if Russia will be tied to it somehow... Maybe say that he was supplying sensitive information to our enemies. That could really impact his image, LOL. ;)

Rand Paul is now calling for the repeal of the Espionage Act. I'm not sure how things can get anymore surreal.

Then perhaps you should look into it? It is not as if this info is not all over the news.

I just Googled it and all I saw were things about taxes. Drudge report isn't highlighting it either.

I'm not sure where to look.
