Griner confessed to the court that it was simply a packing mistake. For for professional athletes who are always on the road and constantly unpacking/re-packing

I think the opposite. When I used to travel quite a bit for work, I had packing down to an art - down to what can be in carry-on, what needs to be checked, and what needs to be left at home because it is not permitted by TSA or not permitted by arrival destinations. I would think a WBNA player constantly on the move from city to city should be very skilled and experienced at packing. I'll concede that there is equal probability she was as careless as there is probability of an intentional act. But I consider neither much of a justification.

And, if it was something that could land me in the slammer, I was paying very close attention.

While that may be true, in Griner's case, she had been playing in Russia in the WNBA off-season for 7 years now. She should have known better.

husband traveled for work in & out of country up to 95 days/yr....he still made mistakes so I believe she could have had it in suitcase from a US plane trip

he lost SO many pocket knives! don't think he completely emptied suitcase after trips cause there were so many trips

Neither does US justice. I don’t believe that would be a defense in any court in the Western world either.

Seems like Russia is perhaps trying to do something that will make the US more receptive to a "prisoner swap"

After Brittney Griner conviction, Russia is ready to discuss prisoner swap with US, Lavrov says - CNN

Russian government officials requested last month that a former colonel from the country's domestic spy agency, who was convicted of murder in Germany last year, be included in the US' proposed swap of notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout for Griner and Paul Whelan, multiple sources familiar with the discussions told CNN.

Rule of thumb, no matter how good the money is, you're playing with fire if you go to a totalitarian state for a pay day.

I would imagine Europeans are probably far more cognizant with regards to international travel in that regard (in terms of knowing which places you shouldn't take certain things)

Over here on the Western side of the pond, we're pretty distanced from the type of stuff that goes on.

Our international travel typically includes going to Canada for a week, or an occasional flight to a westernized Euro country for a vacation.

As to where over there, depending on the European country you're living in, a 2-3 hour drive could put you under a very different set of rules depending on which direction you go.

I no longer buy ex pensive pocket knives. I've lost count of the number I have lost due to metal detectors.

See there, cheap knives are your problem. Buy something you care about losing. (Speaking as one having something of a Victorinox Swiss Army knife fetish and determination to keep it safe from TSA). :smirk: :airplane:

keep it safe from TSA

TSA has some really odd practices with regards to the individual discretion they use for what you can keep and what you can't in my experience flying.

I once had a small pocket knife get through with no issues...and then on another occasion, was told I had to ditch a bottle of cologne I had in a carry on bag for a 2-day trip.

Are the expensive ones immune to metal detection?

Does this really exist? lol

As much as I'm not a fan of the guy, I've learned not to pre-judge every product with his name on it.

When I went to NYC for a conference, the vendor putting the conference on put me up in a room at the Trump hotel there...I had zero complaints with the room or the amenities. The room was awesome lol.

I actually texted a few people that night to say "the guy should've just stuck with hotels instead of trying to run a country"

It was no Grey Goose, but was one of the Trump brands that did what it advertises, it would get you drunk.

I suppose they could've used it for the "open bar" at the 10-year reunion for Trump University grads...

It did occur to me that if the Biden administration is so upset about a person being locked up and given an absurdly harsh sentence for a marijuana offense that they're actually considering trading a spy and an arms dealer in order to get them out...perhaps he should put pen to paper and either

A) write an executive order to end locking people up for it right here in the US moving forward

and/or

B) explore options for a blanket pardon for everyone currently locked up for non-violent drug offenses domestically
