from: Reactions to the End of Roe Reveal Divisions Between Religious Leaders

"According to the Public Religion Research Institute, 43% of Americans who “identify strongly” with their religious identity do not believe Roe v. Wade needed to be overturned. There’s a wide variability within the ranks, however. A majority (56%) of U.S. Catholics believe abortion should be legal, but only 30% of Catholics who attend mass weekly. Similarly, 60% of mainline protestants favor abortion being legal, but only 30% of white evangelical protestants. A slight majority of Muslims and a large majority of Jews also believe abortion should be legal in most cases."

70% of Catholics who attend mass weekly - apparently do not believe abortion is ok
70% of white evangelical protestants do not favor abortion

I think we'll see majority Christian opinion change over time to be in favour of the new Status Quo. People often think that it's the democratic will of the people that changes law, yet it seems to me that it is the law that changes the people. Most American Christians have conformed themselves to the standards of America, which aren't Christian standards. That explains why only the most devout are against abortion, because they don't put America first, but God and Christianity first.

"White Evangelical Protestant" and "Mainline Protestant" are two different religious groups.

Mainline Protestants mirror the rest of the nation, more or less, in favoring the legality of abortion in most cases.

America is not a Christian nation. It has no established religion.

I don't believe I said it was a Christian nation. Only that a majority of American Christians have conformed themselves to America first rather than Christianity. Hence why the most devout American Christians are more likely to oppose abortion. They will, in time however, change their opinion to get used to the new status quo. People respond to law and conform to it. This is good as it's more in line with Christian principles.

If a human baby has to be born because of law, not love, it is a crime to let him born as if he were a valuable intelligent pet.
In other words, it is a crime, speaking spiritually, against the coming human baby by allowing his normal birth to happen when no one in the world is awaiting his arrival with real love and great joy.

Fortunately, my parents brought me into life based on love, not on a law that bans abortion.

With regards to this topic, the kinds of numbers you're seeing are likely due to the fact that people feel as if they're being presented with only two extreme options, and are picking the one they feel is the lesser of two evils.

***Disclaimer***: Per CF rules, I'm not endorsing anything nor am I claiming that abortion is a good thing, nor should this following statement be misconstrued as "promotion" in any way shape or form...just to clarify

But, if the mainstream "pro-choice position" was
- Exceptions for non-elective abortions (rape, incest women's health)
- Elective abortions capped at 16 weeks
- 100% private pay and no expectation of tax payer funding being used to pay for it

...such a position would likely have large majority support (again, not promoting anything here, just plainly stating how a lot of people would vote if that "were" the position...again, not promoting abortion, just to be clear...want to cover my bases before anyone gets an itchy trigger finger with the 'report' button)

However, the progressive narrative on abortion as of late has been "no limits, abortion up until 9 months for any reason at all, and public funding should be used for people who can't afford to pay for it themselves, and it should be celebrated as some form of win for feminism"...that's something that most people aren't going to be on board with.

You don't have to take my word for it, here's Vox (left-leaning outlet) summarizing the data...
What Americans think about abortion, in 3 charts

Given that only 8% of Americans say "illegal in all cases", and only 19% say "legal in all cases"... that leaves a whole lot of people in the middle who are left with making a "lesser of two evils" decision.

Like with a few other issues as of late, some on the far-left have moved their party's position far enough outside the overton window that their perceived position is no longer seen as the "lesser of two evils" anymore in the eyes of a lot of people.

It would do the democratic party well to "practice what they preach" on the concept of acknowledging that "individual rights are not unlimited". They have no problem embracing that concept with regards to gun rights (by pushing for limitations on that right), but seemingly that concept has escaped them on the topic of abortion. And certain mouthpieces for the democratic party (as well as some pro-abortion activist groups) have essentially become "The NRA of abortion advocacy", where any proposed limitation at all gets spun into "an attack on women" (much like the NRA spins any gun control proposal as 'an attack on your right to defend yourself')

You and I were both fortunate. But that just means there isn't just one crime here, there's two (spiritually) and you're advocating committing the one because of the other.

You should flip the parties in what you wrote and see how it reads. It hits the mark perfectly as well. The pro-life side could pick up a lot of the middle if they just would allow some abortions and stopped harassing people getting them. Why don’t you lecture to them?

I assume you mean by 'the other crime' the killing of the flesh of the coming baby. You are right in this, because it should be a crime in the material world. After all, the powerful rich Elite in the world need babies to be born by force (law) in order to use them later (when adults) in their Wars and Terror, along with the powerless kids who lost their parents in them (wars and terror). So I assure you there will be always rules that ban abortion. In this respect, even the most civilized country, China, its Elite encourage now the Chinese couples to have more than one child in their big cities (which was the limit for a family to have, a bit earlier).

But I also understand that you cannot get well what I am saying. For example, in where you live it is rather hard, if not impossible, to hear of the protected camps, installed in many weak/occupied countries, to raise and train powerless lonely kids. In most of these camps, the kids are prepared to play, when adults, the terrorists in the 9/11 terror series. This is why what is known as the Arab Spring had to start 10 years after (after year 2001, when more than 3 thousand citizens in NYC were sacrificed horribly in daylight and in front of the entire world, for more power and incomes, by introducing the new world's bogyman 'Terror of Islam', replacing the previous one 'Communism'). In year 2011, not less than a half of million kids became adults and ready to be sent to terrorize millions of civilians in many countries while they hold flags on which it is written in Arabic: "Allah is the messenger of Mohammad" (3 vertical words when read from top to bottom as every Arab reader does). This was indeed a genius idea because an ordinary Muslim won't hold such a flag while the well trained armed terrorists were/are instructed to hold it anytime they were asked to invade a city, town or village. So I see in most of these terrorists the deceived kids who had to serve the dreams of the powerful rich masters in the world while they think they serve Allah (much like many troops around the world were also made to think they serve Moses' God, if not Jesus!).

Now, you know why banning abortion in the name of Jesus, Moses or Allah (to name a few) will have always certain powerful rich groups (religious or political) to impose it on their powerless people. I mean please don't worry, your voice will be heard always.

According to Pew Research (2021), 65% of U.S. adults are Christian.

So? That doesn't mean that Americans that practice other religions, or none, are not entitled to the same rights as other Americans.

Thomas Jefferson was explicit that the United States is not a Christian nation.

George Carlin said something similar decades ago. Anti-abortion politics benefits privileged people that don't value adult human life.

Thomas Jefferson was explicit that the United States is not a Christian nation.

Being an independent student of Jesus, I understand that a country could be called Muslim or Jewish , to name a few, but surely not Christian; if the word Christian refers to Jesus Christ message of Love. Every country should be ruled by a LAW, certainly not by God's Unconditional Love {Matthew 5:44-45}.
Therefore, if, someday, all verses that are also related to this Unconditional Love, like {Matthew 5:39}, will be removed from the Gospel, it would be possible to call a nation Christian.

Yup, so many are conformed to and brainwashed by the world and their view on things instead of God's view.

Mainline Protestants mirror the rest of the nation, more or less, in favoring the legality of abortion in most cases.
Favoring the legality of abortion is a vague statement.

Do they favor the legality of abortion until 10 weeks of pregnancy? 15 wks? 20 wks? 25 wks? . . . . . 40 wks?

Do they favor the legality of abortion when the mother's health in danger? When there are birth defects? When there is rape? etc.

These are all nuances to the question. To answer simply "yes" or "no" to favoring the legality of abortion is ridiculous!!!

I think very few favor the legality of abortion without conditions up to 40 wks of pregnancy.

And very few favor criminalizing abortion under all circumstances.

Most people in the US were generally OK with the limits placed on abortion under the Roe regime, including mainline Protestants. Roe tried to balance complex conflicts of interest in a way that respected womens autonomy over their own bodies.
