Pelosi banned from receiving communion in San Francisco archdiocese over her position on abortion - CNNPolitics

The conservative archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, says House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may no longer receive the holy sacrament of Communion in the archdiocese, because she supports abortion rights.
Interesting. The Archbishop is turning Pelosi away not because she had an abortion herself--which would be a Christian sin--but because she is not striving to criminalize a Christian sin for the non-Christian citizens of a secular state.

As per the quote: "...because she supports abortion rights." i.e. I believe she was/is actively engaged in supporting abortion.

Sounds like a good argument for Church taxation.

From an outsider's perspective I could see why one might think that, but from a purely religious standpoint I can see why the archdiocese would say this. It's a sin to support abortion, even more to endorse and encourage it. Because of the graveness of this mortal sin and the refusal to genuinely repent for it, it makes sense that she would be denied communion. It's not necessarily a matter of getting involved in politics... Though I hope they're also doing this with other politicians and such who have made their support of abortion a public spectacle.

It’s a sin to lie, cheat, steal, commit adultery, abuse children, etc. Is communion denied these Catholics?

I don't think anyone should be taking communion. Most people that do take communion are sinning. I wonder how many leaders of the church took communion after raping the children in the church. Even after being caught continued to take communion. It's just political nonsense.

No one is supposed to recieve communion in sin, this why the Church encourages regular confession
The “honor” system. Did the Church authorities take communion while they were covering up widespread sex abuse? Probably.

Even if we take out the "supporting abortion rights" mortal sin, there are large numbers of Catholics taking communion without having properly dealt with their sins through confession each week. The priests know that. The bishops know that. When they know of a specific case, a priest will often tell someone in "mortal sin" not to approach for communion. (The big one is usually co-habitation or post-divorce romantic engagements.) But, even in those cases, an unfamiliar priest won't know to stop the same people.

A public pronouncement is definitely just political nonsense. At least a third of the communicants each Sunday have similar positions on abortion to the Speaker and some of them are also active with various support to choice groups or politicians. (I say "at least a third" despite at least half of self-identified Catholics having that position, since studies also show that regular mass attenders are less likely to be pro-choice. Just being conservative.)

I still don't see what the justification is for criminalizing Christian sins for the non-Christian citizens of a secular state. Do Christians imprison their own members for committing sins? If not, how do they justify imprisoning non-Christians for committing them?

It's a wonderful movie by Cordileone and one which has been way over due. To advocate for what is sinful should not be tolerated in Christianity and clerical silence and lack of religious enforcement of the rules has lead to this sort of situation. Being a Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant should mean being held to account by spiritual authority. Faith is not purely a private matter.

Should Christians obey non-Christian laws and rules put on them by non Christians?

So if it was a Federal law Christians shouldn't obey non-Christian rules/laws from non-Christians?

You don't seem to be understanding...

Christian/non-Christian doesn't matter with laws passed by governments.

The related claim is that we non-Christians are making is that if you Christians want to impose a restriction upon yourselves that fine, but you you have no general right to impose it on others.

Because she is an elected official it is her sworn duty to her constituents.
To support abortion? Hardly. If that were the case then how are there politicians who aren't doing that?

Furthermore, exactly what "sworn duty" are you referring to? This is the oath that a member of the House of Representatives must take:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

Do you see anything here at all about anything about duty to constituents? Because I don't. Is there another oath I am unaware of?
