Well put… and basically the same story for me. I too had left the Dem Party before Trump (changed to independent during the Obama years), but just couldn’t identify as a republican until Trump came along, when I changed my registration again. My mom (a lifelong democrat) also changed to republican at the same time, and she passed away before covid, still a staunch supporter. The rest of my family, all democrats (and still are), continually asked why I changed. My answer was generally always brief (just liked his message) because I knew that like so many others they were just democrats, no matter what, disliked Trump and would never consider the message or change from the personal ideals ‘they’ had of the Dem Party, when in actuality it had already changed and left them behind. They still refuse to put the glasses on, even in this trainwreck.
It's hard to change parties. But my grandfather, a co-conspirator with Hubert Humphrey in the formation of the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party, saw that it was no longer the same thing that it was at it's founding in 1944 or even 1964. The Party moved. A lot of working class stiffs cling to the old ideas, and old loyalties, but that's an illusion. The Democrats are a different beast today.

I'm not liking what this Trump Party is now, even though I do conceded some aspects of the Trump presidency were good. I would rather that both of the big parties devolve and a middle ground but pro-life party could have a shot at it. Republican was never my brand of choice although for several years it was far more sane and inviting than the Democrats had become. I'd like the American Solidarity Party to actually launch. They make abundant sense to me but they don't seem able to manage a takeoff.

Yes, it’s hard to change parties because you consider it as changing your personal beliefs, whether they are actually being representative of you or not, and most of what I said about blind Dem support holds true for party republicans as well. Right now though, after what I’ve seen in the past 16 months, Trump would really have to ‘step in it’ to change my mind.

My opinion is that he stepped in it with his tweets, but had he had someone monitor that he would have been quite good as a president. He did face an overwhelming enemy in the media, who only knew how to make him look bad, worse than he actually was. They were out to get him, and relied on invention when parody was not enough.

I'm not sure who I want to see as president. I don't think the Democrats or the Republicans can actually promote healing in this country. To my mind, more of the same Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dum leads to civil war, probably like Lebanon went through. I'm not excited about that.

In his four years Trump upset a lot of liberals, yes, but we were a lot better off than we are now and he didn't wreck the country... I'd call that competent.

Except when Trump wrecked the country and tried to overthrow the government.

His tweets were way down on my list of concerns, but as I've said, I always saw a different message from those who disliked or even hated him.

True, but here's an idea we're gonna have to warm up to... there's no middle road candidate that either side will vote for at this point, so we have to choose wisely among the options we have, or accept the conditions we live under.

I'd choose Liz Cheney or Mitt Romney every day over the sycophantic group of Trump apologists in the Republican party. At least they (Romney and Cheney) are not blatant liars and in denial.

That’s what they say, but most of the people there were peacefully protesting and were just as turned off by what a small percentage (was it 500 people) of the crowd did. And, I’m still not convinced of the real motives behind it, but it was a shame either way. If Trump had tried to overthrow the government, he’d be in jail. But, that didn’t wreck the country anyway; the past 16 months has done that.

Hundreds of police were injured. Please, the peaceful thing is just a lie. Stop minimizing an attempt to overthrow the government.

They were there because of 'stop the steal' That was a lie they were fed by Trump.

My fear is that the lack of a middle brings about open warfare. Then we pick our side and shoot our neighbor if they don't burn us first. We like our Parties too much to seek a peaceful solution.

140 injured the best I can gather, and couldn't find how serious those were, but still not good. If Trump could have been convicted of what you say, he'd be in jail, so get over it.

I don't have to get over anything, and the investigation is not over.

Trump will never go to jail, but that just shows that justice is never distributed equally in this country.

I doubt trump has run since the 80s!
It's funny to imagine tho.

He may try to run for president to continue avoiding accountability for his actions. I would much rather see America turn down the level of polarization and tribalism. I don't think it is possible if trump runs for office. It may not be possible if millions of Americans still think trump is good for America. Extremists are empowered by his example.

Does it matter how badly they were injured? Each and every person who attempted to even stop a police officer from their duty should have been arrested.

It's a rough world with ruthless leaders... soft shoes won't get us through it imo.

Didn't I say it wasn't good? I agree that they 'all' should've been arrested so we could have exposed every motive.

America survives and even thrived when speaking softly while carrying a large stick! Roosevelt understood.

I understand many were there peacefully protesting because of the lie of 'stop the steal', but if they did not participate in the violence they should receive no punishment. Protesting is legal. I just wish the cops involved in the BLM protests would have been as understanding and 'docile' as the Capital police.

The country is better off in almost every way compared to Trump.
