The Law is contained in 613 Mitzvot of Torah.

Matthew 5:17 explains that Jesus has fulfilled the Law.

Matthew 22:37-40 also explains that Jesus has replaced the Law with these two : Love your God and Love your neighbour as you love yourself.

If you have love do you need to be given the Law ?

Fulfill here means to fill-full. Jesus is not contradicting Himself from one sentence to another. And if one were to try not to place a personal bias to what Jesus is saying, the scripture explains clearly as Jesus goes on to say if one teaches others and break the least of these commandments (quoting from the Ten) will be least in heaven. I don’t think least means one will barely make it in heaven, but we have free will to test this theory, I just don’t recommended it.
Matthew 5:17-30

When one fulfills their wedding vows does that mean we are free to commit adultery or does that mean we keep our weddings vows.

Matthew 22:37-40 are not new commandments Jesus is quoting from the Old Testament Lev 19:18 but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: Deut 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, Love is summed up when we obey God’s law- not disobey. For this is the love of God that we keep His commandments 1 John 5:3. The first 4 commandments how to love God and the last 6 how to love our neighbor. Love is found right in these commandments that God spoke and God wrote. Exodus 20:6

When in the New Covenant someone asked which commandments to keep for eternal life Jesus quoted directly from the Ten. Matthew 19:17-19, Jesus quoted from the Ten stating to keep the least of the commandments Matthew 5:17-30 and again stating to not keep mans traditions over the commandments of God and going on to say when doing so you worship in vain. Matthew 15:3-9, Mark 7:6-8. To say Jesus did away with the Ten Commandments and all we have to do it love is not being honest with what the scripture says. Love to God is only worshipping Him, not bowing to idols, using God’s name with the upmost holy respect it deserves, keeping His Sabbath day holy. This is love to God. Love to our neighbor is honoring our parents, not committing murder or adultery, or bearing false witness against them, coveting what they have nor stealing from them. When we keep from doing these things God shows us mercy because we love Him and obey Him.Exodus 20:6. Which is why each one of the Ten Commandments is repeated in the New Covenant for everyday Christian living.

We should believe Jesus when He taught us to keep the Ten Commandments, the only law God personally wrote with His own finger. How could that not be perfect, just like our Creator who wrote it.

God bless

John 13:34-35
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

John 15:12
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command.

John 17:23
I in them and You in Me--that they may be perfectly united, so that the world may know that You sent Me and have loved them just as You have loved Me.

1 Corinthians 13
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Galatians 5:22-26
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Ephesians 5:2
and walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant sacrificial offering to God.

Colossians 2:2
That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

1 John 2
And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

1 John 3
Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

1 John 4:1-12
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

1 John 4
If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.

1 John 5
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith

1-Gods unconditional love. How many times do we sin against God and He forgives us our transgressions against Him? Psalm 103:12- He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. Isaiah 43:25- I, yes I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake and remembers your sins no more.

2- Love is the #1-character trait of a believer. The fruit of the spirit is Love from which all the fruit of the spirit flows. 1 Corinthians 13:2-7 describes love in action.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

3- Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. Ephesians 5:25.There are no conditions Jesus places on His bride. Jesus doesn’t hold her sins and unfaithfulness against her. He covers her sin, forgives and protects her.

4- Loving those who love you is not Gods love that is human love. Jesus said in Luke 6:32-33 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And indeed, if you do good to those doing good to you, what credit is it to you? For even sinners do the same. Luke 6:35- But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

1 John 4:20- If anyone says, "I love God," but hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

miseó: to hate

Original Word: μισέω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: miseó
Phonetic Spelling: (mis-eh'-o)
Definition: to hate
Usage: I hate, detest, love less, esteem less. properly, to detest (on a comparative basis); hence, denounce; to love someone or something less than someone (something) else, i.e. to renounce one choice in favor of another.

5- Love covers a multitude of sins, it doesn’t expose sin.

1 Peter 4:8- Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.

Proverbs 10:12- Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all transgressions.

Proverbs 16:28- A perverse man spreads dissension, and a gossip divides close friends.

Proverbs 17:9- Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.

6- Love forgives as it’s been Forgiven.

Colossians 3:12-17

Ephesians 4:26-32

“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Just how is pleasing Jesus on a daily basis similar to pleasing my wife on a daily basis and having fellowship that is not broken. Love is the Key !

I do not intentionally say and do things to hurt her but say and do things that life her up, encourage her, talk with her, bounce things off of her. I might think something that I know is wrong but I catch myself before I say it and get that thought out of my head. The same is true with Jesus when a thought pops into my head that I know doesn't glorify Him. I realize it and do not act upon it but think of scripture that gets that out of my head so that I do not sin against Him. And if I do just like with my wife I ask for forgiveness because I do not want any tension or broken fellowship in our relationship. I'm married to her, one with her and I desire that oneness just like I do with being one with Christ. I want to do the things that please Him just as I desire to do the things that please my wife.

That is what love is considering the other’s needs, wants, and desires as more important than your own. It’s to deny self (wants, interests, desires) that would hinder that relationship and place theirs above your own. It’s the Philippians 2 concept that Jesus did by being humble and we are to have that same mindset as Christ had which Paul tells us in that passage. 1 Cor 13 and the fruit of the spirit are all relational which involves people/God. Its why Jesus said all the law is fulfilled in these 2 commands- Love God with all your heart, mind and soul and your neighbor. James calls it the Royal Law of Love. All men will know you are My disciples by your love for one another.

hope this helps !!!

Let's take a closer look.

Matthew 5:17-21 In the opening statement, concerning the law and the prophets, Jesus makes it clear.

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
What did Jesus mean when He said He came to fulfill? We find the answer in Luke 24:44, when Jesus is bringing to remembrance the words He spoke to His disciples.

44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

At first glance, Jesus is speaking of Himself only, concerning the cross, but read further.

45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
What did Jesus fulfill?

46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
What has yet to be fulfilled?

47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Sound familiar?

Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Back to Matthew 5. The first thing Jesus says after His opening statement is that the law will not pass until heaven and earth pass—till all be fulfilled.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
What are the commandments Jesus is referring to? The law.

The righteousness requirement.

20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus points to the Ten Commandments.

21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
Jesus is not negating "Thou shalt not kill" (the law), He is explaining the root of God's law—love.

Now let's look at Matthew 22:36-40. Notice...

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus summarizes the Ten Commandments.

Commandments 1-4: Love God

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.
Commandments 6-10: Love Your Neighbor.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
The law and the prophets hang on love. Attached to, not separated, not done away with.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Furthermore, Paul explains the fulfillment of the law.

Romans 8:3-4

3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us [til all be fulfilled; Matthew 5:18], who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Matthew 3:13-15, Jesus says the same thing to John at His baptism. At the very beginning of His ministry.

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
Matthew 24:35, Jesus reiterates what He said in Matthew 5:18.

35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
More of the words of Jesus that will not pass away.

John 14:9-11 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

Matthew 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:14). The Word of God. God does not change. Jesus does not change. Therefore, the law of God does not change, nor is it done away with.

Malachi 3:6 For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Hebrews 13:8-9 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines...
Move forward to the book of Revelation, which declares itself as the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Abominations, sins and even the Ten Commandments are mentioned.

Revelation 2: Letters to the Churches
  • 2: Liars (bearing false witness); Exodus 20:16
  • 4: Apostasy - Church left its first love. Called to repentance.
  • 9: Blasphemy
  • 14-16: Sacrifices to idols. Fornication. False doctrine. Called to repentance.
  • 20-23: Fornication, Adultery, Sacrifices to idols. False doctrine. Call to repentance.
Revelation 3: Letters to the Churches
  • 9: Liars (bearing false witness); Exodus 20:16
  • 15:17: Lukewarmness (of which could include sin of all manner)
Revelation 22:13-16

13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
  • Liars, murderers, idolaters, adulterers.
16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Conclusion: Had the Ten Commandments, even the abominations, somehow been fulfilled, scripture would make it a point to let us know. Instead, Jesus points to the law in His ministry, telling us it will not pass away, then gives John the Revelation of Jesus Christ post-crucifixion, from heaven, concerning the law that is still binding. And we have barely touched on the writings of the prophets that uphold the Ten Commandments. The law and the prophets were not nailed to the cross, they were hung upon love, which is the character of God. You can't look at love without seeing God's law hanging from it, because they are one and the same.

We should believe Jesus when He taught us to keep the Ten Commandments, the only law God personally wrote with His own finger. How could that not be perfect, just like the Creator who wrote it. God bless

So is this perfect? Or advisory.

18 “If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and, though they discipline him, will not listen to them, m Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones.

We must obey the law, but without even needing to hear it (Rom 2:13). We have a new righteousness now under the new covenant that accomplishes that, the right way finally:

"But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe."
Rom 3:21-22

"...not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith." Phil 3:9

And the name of this new righteousness that fulfills the law is love, God's own nature. And yet it's not a bad thing to hear and know the law, because it still serves its purpose-to remind us when we're failing to love since we aren't yet so perfected in love as to never sin. At least that's what the ancient chruches taught regarding the moral law-the ten commandments.

Correct. Forgiveness offers the only source of perfection.

But didn't Jesus's death on the Cross defeat sin/death?

Isn't that the point (summarized)?

Aren't we ALL (because Jesus didn't die only for a specific group or specific sin(s), but for the "sin of the world'.....right?) freed from the bondage (slavery)of sin?

I slipped in to mention this Bible study series that's focused on the genesis of the ancient Christian church recorded in Acts. The teacher presents the material from an ancient Hebrew lens, which keeps the Gospel story in cultural, linguistic, and chronological context.

Here's the trailer (for those interested):

Aren't we ALL (because Jesus didn't die only for a specific group or specific sin(s), but for the "sin of the world'.....right?) freed from the bondage (slavery)of sin?

I slipped in to mention this Bible study series that's focused on the genesis of the ancient Christian church recorded in Acts. The teacher presents the material from an ancient Hebrew lens, which keeps the Gospel story in cultural, linguistic, and chronological context.

Here's the trailer (for those interested):

Jesus died for the forgiveness and sanctification of sin. There is no scripture stating Jesus died so we can continue living a life of sin without repentance and turning from sin and walking in obedience to Christ. Maybe you can point to that scripture where Jesus said we are free to sin. Jesus quotes the opposite. Matthew 5:17-19. John 14:15, Matthew 5:19-30, Matthew 15:3-9, Mark 7:6-8. Jesus did die for the forgiveness of sin for everyone and if you love Jesus, you will keep His commandments, not break them as Jesus tells us with His own Words.

I believe you've missed my point. I was referring to your statement that "sin is of the devil" (or something of that nature). We can't place the blame on something external especially since Jesus defeated sin and even death ("the last enemy").

But I think that's another topic for another thread.

Back to the OP.....Jesus made it simple....."Love God and love others".

Do you think we live in a sinless world really?

I was quoting John 3:8 which still applies today.

He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

Jesus will defeat sin and the devil but as of right now it is very prevalent and we have these as our choices:

Romans 6:16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

The Law is contained in 613 Mitzvot of Torah.
According to the scriptures, there is no 613 laws in God's ten commandments that God wrote on two tables of stone with His own finger on two tables of stone (Exodus 34:28; Deuteronomy 4:13; Deuteronomy 10:4; from Exodus 20:3-17; Exodus 34:16). The 613 Mitzvot of the Torah include all the laws from the Mosaic book of the old covenant written by Moses (Exodus 24:7; Deuteronomy 31:24) which are not the same as Gods' ten commandments spoken (Exodus 20:3-17) and written by God alone with His own finger *Exodus 34:16. In contrast the Mosaic "shadow laws" for remission of sins were written by Moses and include all the laws of the Sanctuary, Levitical Priesthood, animal sacrifices and sin offerings, circumcision and the annual feast days to teach Gods' people what to do if they broke God's laws which point to God's new covenant promise of salvation by Gods' grace through faith in Jesus who is God's sacrifice for the sins of the world *John 1:29; 36; Hebrews 10:10). Unlike the latter that is restricted only to the old covenant, God's ten commandments have the same role in the new covenant that they always had and that is to give us the knowledge of good (moral right doing when obeyed) and evil (moral wrong doing when disobeyed); sin (moral wrong doing when disobeyed) and righteousness (moral right doing when obeyed) *see Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4; Psalms 119:172 and if we break anyone of them we stand guilty before God of sin according to James in James 2:10-11.
Matthew 5:17 explains that Jesus has fulfilled the Law.
According to the scriptures Jesus did not fulfill the law so that we no longer have to. In fact, Jesus starts off by saying in Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." That is do not even let this come into your mind that I am telling you that I have come to abolish God's law or the prophets. Jesus is stating that he is coming to fulfill them, that is all the shadow laws that pointed to Christ under the Mosaic laws for remission of sins and to perfectly obey and do Gods' law in fulfilling his duty of love to God and our fellow man.

A teaching of lawlessness (without law) is not biblical and is a false teaching according to the scriptures. Jesus then goes on to says "till heaven and earth shall pass not a dot of tittle shall pass from the law till all be fulfilled" and again "unless our righteousness exceeds that of the Scribes and the Pharisees we will not enter into the Kingdom of God *see Matthew 5:20; Matthew 23:27-31. According to the scriptures, Jesus came to fulfill not to abolish Gods' law. Anyone teaching Gods' law is abolished is teaching lawlessness (without law) which is not biblical. According to the scriptures, Jesus came to fulfill all righteousness *Matthew 3:15 and all things written of Him in the scriptures (e.g. Matthew 2:15; 23; Matthew 4:13-14; 8:16-17; 12-16:17; 13:35; 21:4; Matthew 27:35 etc) not abolish the 10 commandments.

Matthew 5:20 is interesting because on the outside the Scribes and Pharisees as Jesus taught appeared righteous to men. They appeared to others as outwardly blameless in regards to following God's laws but inwardly they were full of sin and like dead man bones *Matthew 23:27 breaking God's law *Matthew 23:27-28. Then Jesus says; For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven *Matthew 5:20. The scripture in Isaiah 42:21 show that Jesus came in fact to magnify the law and to make it honorable and to teach the true meaning of God's Law and that it is to be applied from the inside out to our very thoughts and feelings. It is not therefore good enough to have an outward appearance before men of being obedient to Gods' law. God reads the heart and knows we are all sick with sin *Matthew 15:19-20; Matthew 12:34-35; Jeremiah 13:23; Jeremiah 17:9-10; Matthew 15:19-20; John 5:42 and in need of a new heart and of a Saviour to save us from sin. Many do not know the meaning here according to Jesus in Matthew 9:12-13. Jesus then goes on to magnify Gods' 10 commandments in Matthew 5:21-28 where he talks about murdering your fellow man by being angry with them without reason or committing adultery in our thoughts by looking lustfully at a woman. Think it through dear friend. If Jesus was abolishing Gods' 10 commandments he would not be magnifying them and applying them to our very thoughts and feelings.

Matthew 22:37-40 also explains that Jesus has replaced the Law with these two : Love your God and Love your neighbour as you love yourself. If you have love do you need to be given the Law ?
LOVE IS NOT SEPARATE FROM GOD'S LAW IT IS EXPRESSED IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD'S LAW

According to the scriptures, love is not separate from obedience to God's law. According to the scriptures love is obedience to Gods' law from a new heart and is linked into Gods' new covenant promise. Let's look at the detail. According to Jesus love is not separate from Gods' law. Love is expressed in obeying God's law from the heart which is a part of Gods' new covenant promise written in Hebrews 8:10-12 from Jeremiah 31:31-34; and Ezekiel 36:24-27.

This is why Jesus says in Matthew 22:36-40 that "on these two commandments" of love to God and man "Hang all the law and the prophets." Love to God and man is not separate from obedience to God's law. Love is obedience to Gods' law. This is in agreement to what Paul says in Romans 13:8-10 where he shows that love to our neighbor is obeying all of those commandments in God's 10 commandments that are our duty of love to our fellow man. Paul agreeing with Jesus goes on to show if we love our neighbor as our self we will not commit adultery, we will not kill, we will not steal, we will not bear false witness, we will not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly summed up in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

So love is obeying God's law not breaking it. James also agrees with Jesus and Paul when he says if we show partiality in love it is the same as showing partiality in keeping God's 10 commandments and the result is standing guilty before God of sin in James 2:8-12. John is also in agreement with Jesus, Paul and James when he defines love as obeying Gods' commandments in 1 John 5:2-3. So no one here can claim to love God by breaking Gods' law. If we are practicing sin and breaking Gods' law that is a sign that we do not love God. *John 14:21 as love is not just a feeling separate from our actions *John 14:15.

If we love God therefore according to Matthew 22:36-40; Romans 13:8-10; James 2:8-12; 1 John 5:2-3; John 14:21 and John 14:15
  • Will we have other Gods?
  • Will we make idols and worship them?
  • Will we take his name [follow] him in vain?
  • Will we remember his seventh day Sabbath and keep it holy?
If we love our neighbour therefore according to Matthew 22:36-40; Romans 13:8-10; James 2:8-12; 1 John 5:2-3; John 14:21 and John 14:15
  • Will we honor our parents?
  • Will we murder?
  • Will we commit adultery with our neighbor's spouse?
  • Will we steal from them?
  • Will we lie to them?
  • Will we covet what they own?
Now if your answer is no then you agree with me. If your answer is yes what kind of love are you talking about where breaking any of Gods' 10 commandments is loving God or loving our fellow man? Yet the above is only what Jesus is telling us in Matthew 22:36-40; Paul in Romans 13:8-10; James in James 2:8-12 and John in 1 John 5:2-3 (see also 1 John 3:6-9; Romans 3:31; Romans 8:4; Romans 6:1-23 and 1 John 2:3-4).

..............

According to the scriptures, love is not separate from our actions. According to the scriptures we are saved by grace through faith and not of ourselves it is a gift of God and not of works lest any man should boast *Ephesians 2:8-9 but Gods grace is so we can be obedient to the faith *Romans 1:5. Obedience to God's Law is not how we are saved it is the FRUIT of faith of one that is already been given Gods promise of salvation and the fruit of God's work in us *Philippians 2:13 as we believe and follow his word *John 10:26-27. If our faith has no fruit it is dead *James 2:18-20; 26 and our tree will be cast down and thrown into the fire *Matthew 3:10; 7:19-20; 13:49-50; Hebrews 10:26-27. Therefore we do not abolish God's law through faith like some people teach but God's law is established in the heart by faith that works by love *Romans 3:31; 1 John 5:3-4; Romans 13:8-10. According to the scriptures, sin (breaking God' commandments and not believing and following God's Word) is the difference between the children of God and the children of the devil *1 John 3:6-10; 1 John 2:3-4; Revelation 12:17; Revelation 14:12; Revelation 22:14.

Your may also want to consider that Jesus saves us from the inside out which is why we need to be born again *John 3:3-7; 1 John 3:4 into God's new covenant promise through faith to receive a new heart to love and walk in His Spirit *Hebrews 8:10-12; from Jeremiah 31:31-34; Ezekiel 36:24-27; Romans 3:31; 1 John 5:2-4; Galatians 5:16.

Take Care.

First, how does the Bible define the "love" we need to "have"?
Second, Matthew 5:17 is surrounded by verses that say Jesus didn't come to abolish the law but to fulfill it? How do you explain that context?
Third, in those two commandments that Jesus quotes, he refers to two passages in the Old Testament. How do you explain that fact?

You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

Galatians 6:10
So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Zechariah 8:16
These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace;
