Some have said that God loves everyone (and they quote verses like 2 Peter 3:9).

Others have said that God hates some people (and they quote Ps. 5:5).

To me this seems like a false dichotomy perhaps, and I wonder if when it refers to "hate" if really it means that God hates the position of someone in sin - but not the person themselves.

Does God love everyone?

Yes He does but He hates the response unbelievers make to His Love.

We come from dust and return to dust so what is it that is left. Attitude. God has no need to love or hate a body yet most people see themselves as just that in identifying themselves as persons. It is like asking someone who they are and they say a doctor. That doesn't answer the question. Two choices, two attitudes. God will draw one attitude towards Himself while pushing the other away. Don't forget, God is well aware of the good and evil.

"And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil:"

John 14:21-24 He that hath My Commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me; and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him and will manifest Myself to him.[22] Judas saith unto Him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that Thou wilt manifest Thyself unto us and not unto the world?[23] Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love Me he will keep My words and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him and make Our abode with him.[24] He that loveth Me not keepeth not My sayings; and the word which ye hear is not Mine, but the Father's which sent Me.

God does not hate. This is a human trait. Jesus Christ of Nazareth is God in the flesh, He hated no one . His love for His creation transcends our understanding.
All I know is no one is capable of this type of love other than God Himself.
Blessings.

Agreed. What most of us call "love" is an immature kind of love. It doesn't even come close to the kind of love that God has for us.

Proverbs 6:16-19 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

God loves everyone. The word "hate" is relative. It is abundantly clear from Scripture, and the historic witness of the Christian Church, that God's love is unconditional and covers everyone.

Those who say otherwise deny the Scriptures and the faith of the Christian Church.

you have stated it correctly God loves all and hates sin also the term hate in the bible is often used more as we would use the word rejects.

Everything God created is good, and He creates out of His love. He opposes and hates that which humans may become by the abuse of our wills.

Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Would we be commanded to do something different than what God would do?

That is what God does and He can be our example.
