I had an idea to add a little more variety into the mix here on OBOB. I thought it would be interesting for us to go down the list of protestant denominations and discuss whether there was anything that we as Catholics could learn from them. Each day the subject can be a different group within protestantism and we can analyze that tradition and see whether anything about it is appropriate for the Church, or maybe nothing at all.

Just to clarify: I'm not saying the Catholic faith needs to change, especially the theology or the Sacraments. That's the best part. But what about outside of those things? Do our protestant cousins do anything that might actually improve Catholicism? Put another way, do they do anything that deep down is truly a Catholic thing because it's rooted in the oldest aspects of Christianity, but for one reason or another the Church lost sight of that and it fell by the wayside?

If you guys are interested in having—what I intend to be—a casual and lighthearted discussion, we can start off in this thread by looking at the Anglican tradition and work our way through the various groups across the gamut.

I think we can learn a lot from early British Catholicism as it has been partially preserved in the Anglican communion. That shows up in the Ordinariate now.

I think we can learn a lot by negative example from the Anglicans as well. They are in the throes of death right now. We should not be trying to replicate that morbid mess.

We should learn some of the great music from the Anglican tradition and steal it. Well, we have stolen some of it. We should steal some more.

I wanted to correct and expand this a bit.

One of the things I was thinking of was the old Sarum Rite. We can learn from that as it was a totally Catholic rite. And then to say that not everything of the old English Catholic way of being is showing up in the Ordinariate, or not showing up just yet. But some of it is. Like the tradition of Evensong. English Catholicism was a pretty vibrant thing before Henry VIII. Some of it survived in the Recusants, who essentially went underground. Some of it survived hidden in Anglicanism. I think it's time to reclaim from both threads. To steal a bit to make for a better thing.

You read my mind. It seems like we can definitely learn something liturgically from the Anglicans, that despite their corrupt morals and progressivism, they've managed to preserve a proper liturgy in a place of primacy.

I'm with you 100%...the Ordinariate Mass seems like the absolute best solution to the division over the Novus Ordo. The Anglican patrimony has had the blueprints for what Vatican II conceived as the Novus Ordo all along; seemingly the only reason one wouldn't want it to supplant what we have currently is because they deliberately want a Mass that's closer to a service from Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church than anything Holy Mother Church would recognize.

I wonder what it would take to make such a proposition to Cdl. Roche and the CDW?

A revival of the Sarum Use would be pretty incredible. But even if not, if we can glean things from it that would enhance the current Mass, that would be a victory.

The Anglo sacred music tradition is probably one of the most beautiful things in Christendom, ignoring it as Catholics is such a dereliction of our obligation to pursue the good the true and the beautiful. It was ours to begin with, we ought to grow it again within the ranks.
